Sky-dweller: Basel preview party in Ottawa

I think this is my first post... Definitely a lurker on here though.

Anyhow, I went to the Rolex event in Ottawa this past Tuesday. I was only really interested in the sky-dweller so I went a little early and was able to see them without anyone else really around.

My thoughts:
The blue and black models were not very legible at a quick glance. I really wanted to like the blue one but yikes, you really have to make an effort to locate the hands. Since I use my watch to, you know, tell the time, I basically decided that those two models were not for me. YMMV of course.

That said, the white one is very legible and I can confirm that depending on the angle, the color changes (grey white). It's really interesting.

Not as heavy as the PM version (obviously), lighter than my Omega seamaster.

The blue dial looks to be the same color as the blue dial of the DJ2 that I have. When people say that it's darker it might just be because of the busy dial. Maybe a smidge darker, maybe depending on the angle? I suspect it's just the busy dial and the darker inner GMT dial.

The thickness of the watch didn't bother me. Not as thick as my Omega.

Availability is sometime in October apparently.

Didn't look at the TT since I'm not really a fan...

I personally wouldn't buy it without seeing it first. The pictures on the rolex website are borderline false advertisement lol

Cheers

I finally convince myself that I don't want one of these then I see a post like this and it starts all over again!

Welcome to TRF.

I agree with you on the blue dial. I saw them at a Basel event in May and felt the white dial was far easier to read. The blue and black both were difficult to read at a glance IMO.

I'd definitely want to see in the metal before ordering.

A few more shots for those on the fence :-)

Also tried on the new SD43. Didn't like the fit and the look didn't blow me away but as my parents told me years ago, les goûts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas. Hope those who got theirs will wear it in good health.

The new SkyD tempts me more and more each time I see a pic.

Not sure how OP can say the pics on the Rolex website are borderline false advertising. You look at the same photo on ten different monitors and the shades and hues of the colours will vary between each one, however slightly.

Good thing I have a color calibrated monitor :-)

But seriously, anyone thinking the dial will look like what's on the rolex website will be in for a surprise. It's not even close. It seems that the majority of those who have seen it in real life are of the same opinion.

I really encourage prospective buyers to see it first. Despite all the lights at the AD, the dial is darker than what I expected.

Cheers

Fair point. My Sub LVc doesn't look much like what it does on the website either but then comparing an image, as opposed to a photograph, with the real thing is never going to be a totally accurate representation.

I think it's a good idea to see anything in the flesh before buying, especially when it costs that much money

They just don't pop in person imo like the pm versions....also a large wearing watch just like the sd43.........I'm interested still but need to see it more to be sure it's for me.

I tried the YG one and it was essentially impossible to look at the watch without sunglasses lol

Very pretty but too much bling for me :-)

No.
The champagne is quite magnificent and stands out as being in a class of its own.
I think the white is nice too for an economy model and would be my choice as it's in my price bracket except i'm not particularly a fan of white dials but i'll probably get one regardless.

I guess we each have different abilities to interpret visual input. Sorry the blue and black don't work for you. Nice write up, btw.

Thanks and no problem at all. Just trying to give back to the community :-)

I'm sure the blue and black will be the most popular versions of that watch. They're both good looking but fall short from a functional perspective for *me*. I'm sure they'll be just fine for others!

Cheers

I looked at the Rolex site; I must admit theirs looks almost light blue with little dark contrasting blue.

Great review, thanks for sharing.

I had never noticed the poor 'legibility at a glance' issue you mention on the blue and black dials, but looking at the pics again I can see exactly what you mean - I glad you pointed that out because that's not something anyone else has ever mentioned and once you see it you cant 'un see' it and it is a potential issue.

The Blue definitely looks different in different lights - even in your pics it alters.

The first couple of pics at the start of the thread it looks quite vibrant and bright, whereas in the wrist shot next to the white one it looks a lot darker and subdued with almost a grey tinge.

Like you say - definitely one to see in the flesh before committing to buy especially now you mention the legibility issue.

btw - this was your 7th post not 1st - just in case you forgot about the other 6 dating back to 2015!...

Great shots. Really interesting to look at that pic of the blue SD with your blue DJII. They look like nearly the same watch. Like you said, and DJII with a busier dial. Of the three the one I thought I would like the least is turning out to be the one I like most - white
