Rolex crown is etched into SubC sapphire glass

In chatting with a friend today who also shares a hobby for collecting watches, we were talking about my new SubC ND and how incredible a watch it is. He said to me, "have you seen the small crown at the 6 marker on the dial?" I was admittedly a little confused and thought he meant the crown that is inlayed on the inside of the dial. I was wrong, he showed me if you look close enough there is a very tiny Rolex crown etched into the Sapphire crystal. Li can barely see it under the right lighting, it almost looks like a small smudge. I'm assuming this is something they do to identify authentic pieces but nonetheless something I find pretty cool. Chalk it up for another reason I'm really enjoying my 114060!

Something else you might enjoy is the counterweight on your seconds hand fully eclipses the O in Rolex on the dial when it passes

Enjoy your sub!

For sure! I'm sure a lot of the members on here are aware of it but it's not one of those things that people talk about on review videos, so I figured for us noobs that it was worth posting haha.

I have the same watch and enjoy it very much. I think there are more hidden crowns on index lumes but I am not sure. I have seen it in certain light conditions on close look. I mentioned this on a thread before. https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=520333

They've been putting the LEC (laser etched crown) on the sapphire for years....

What more unique is that it's not on the surface but buried in the glass.

Well obviously I had to look having never heard of it, after 3 minutes of frantically looking and then a further 2 minutes of worrying why mine doesn't have it I finally found it. An FYI if you shine a torch horizontally across the watch face it's suddenly really noticeable! It's a really great little touch and thanks for the heads up.

Yes it was from 2001 on the Laser Etched Hologram was started in the Crystals but not all models at the same time and not always at the 6 position on non date watches .Now at one time on service replacement crystals there was a S through the LEC, but now its not used on replacements. Plus there has been several reports from the independent watchmakers with a Rolex parts account that no LEC on crystals received direct from Rolex nothing is written in stone with Rolex today, green Milgauss crystals don't have the laser etching

The sad and scary thing is that the counterfeits can have this feature too now.

Be careful if this is a feature you use to determine authenticity.

Is that specific to the SubC? Certainly not the case on my SD4K.

I knew about the etched crown on the newer models, my Daytona has it, but never realised about the counter weight, just checked on my daily wear 1996 GMT 16700 and it is the same on there as well.

I know next to nothing about the fakes. I have heard that there are good ones that even have the correct markings on the movements, but all of the fakes that I have seen on YouTube have enough small little things wrong that anyone who is a fairly good WIS should be able to spot them. Especially if you can compare it side-by-side with a real one.

I believe it is called etching but more precisely a laser ablation.

One of the few times I've ever been able to pick up in a photo (though resolution/resizing may make it tough to see here). Nice touch by Rolex

Also notice how the rehaut crown often times doesn't line up to the 12 marker. Rolex perfection? Sketch.

Most good fakes have a LEC now so that alone doesn't tell you anything.

Same with my 116600 Sea-Dweller. Only covers partially.

My 114060 is more like a partial eclipse... guess my AD got me a fake?!?! J/K but it's truly not a full eclipse from what I see

Are you also familiar with what the different dots or dash means on your crown?
