Sapphire Caseback - do you have one on your Rolex?
These are of course aftermarket, but what's your opinion of the sapphire see-through caseback on your Rolex? Yes/no? Success or horror? Sealed ok? Pressure/water tested successfully? Junk???
Thanks! |

I think they are cool. They are easy to replace if you want to sell the watch so no worries about originality.

I think they would be cool but I am pretty much on OEM parts guy. I would get it pressure tested, but I would get worried how long would that case back would last and could the seals leak at at time due to poor craftsmanship.
I did like it on my Panerai though. |

I haven't put one on yet. But when I get my next one (SubC or DaytonaC if I'm lucky) I'm going to install one.
For me, part of the magic in wearing a mechanical watch is seeing the movement. I know Rolex aren't finished like APs, PPs, etc, but they're still visually interesting.

I don't. Rolex movements aren't highly decorated like other watch brands that utilize sapphire casebacks.

It's a Thomas Preik case back from Germany.
Steve has his banner at the bottom of the page this month.

I don't and I won't, but I would put one on my OysterQuartz if I still had it. That's a movement worth displaying.

When Rolex makes a movement like this Dato's I would for sure. Just too beautifully mesmeric.

Have to agree and not much to see on any Rolex movement as they are quite plain Jane in the movement looks department,

X2. Never felt the need to have one on any of my watches.

Buy another brand that offers that option if that is what you want. I would never do it to a Rolex movement, they are not sexy like other brands.

I have a Preik sapphire caseback on my Daytona. In my personal opinion, it's about as much of a "modification" as removing or adding a link. Super easily reversible, the caseback is very much a non-permanent modification. If you decide you don't like it, simply spin the stock caseback back on and the watch is just as it came.
One note is that on my Daytona, the sapphire caseback protrudes a touch further than the original steel caseback, so it fits/rides slightly differently. Not a huge deal as this is easily adjustable at the bracelet, but it was an effect that I didn't expect.

My BLNR has a Preik caseback (a banner for which is at the bottom of the page as I type this). Looks great, works perfectly, pressure-tested to spec by a Rolex-authorized watchmaker.
Of course, the movement's not especially pretty, but it's fun to see the thingywhats and whirlybits. |

I have a Preik as well, perfect fit and finish, zero issues. Like to watch the engine from time to time

No. I don't really like them much myself, especially on an undecorated movement like Rolex. I mean, they're great movements but not really something that warrants a display back. One think I like about Rolex is their clean, classic, solid casebacks.

I probably would not put it on a Rolex. But it is a feature that I really love about my Zenith El Primero. I wonder if Zenith Daytona's are this pretty?

I was considering this for my newly-acquired 116710 BLRO for the 3186. I paid extra for that little blue spring. Might be nice to see it. Easy revert if I ever wanted to sell.

Why not. :) The movement doesn't have to be decorated / advanced to be cool. The irony is that many love Rolex for its movements, but won't see them...
