Which steel sub to buy?

Hey,

Looking for a second watch. While I really wanted a WG DD to go with my YG DD, I decided to go for variety.

Considering a steel submariner with black dial. Want something that is a little sportier than my DD and trying to decide what I'd like to do. I am so used to wearing yellow gold (have always had TT datejusts and now a yellow DD) that I'm not sure whether to go with a steel sub, or a s&g sub.

Also not sure whether to do new/used. I know that there is something special about the current model (ceramic bezel?) but haven't done enough research on the different references to know what they mean.

Can anybody shed some light for me on what I should be looking for here? Is it worth buying used for a discount (I saved a ton on a 18038 vs. a new DD36) or do these hold their value so well that it doesn't matter?

I personally went for the iconic sub which is the no date Sub (ref 114060) aka the orignal model. Clean symmetric dial, great feeling, instant classic. Here's mine bought this week.

Since you were already considering PM with a WG DD i would vote WG sub. Its by far my favorite sub. You get a sporty watch ( which is what you are looking for) and still have it be PM

Grab a pre-loved 114060 for under 6k.

I say Smurf also. You only have two choices in black SS. Cant go wrong with either.

So to be sure I understand (smurf out of budget) - the SS sub hasn't changed in a long time so if I go get any one with a date it will be about the same as the current one?

as long as its a 6 digit reference, exactly the same.

The new subs have ceramic bezels and glidelock clasps. Also completely solid bracelets. I would say if you’re hell bent on two tone, get it preowned from a trusted seller on here

I went with the 114060, just a simple, classic Sub. Love it!

I'd say go for that, for about $6k you can get a nice one. If you need a date get an 116610. And if you decide you want TT go with the Bluesy 116613. All good options! The 114060 is the simplest, cheapest, and mos tradtional. Great classic sport watch.

Well first you can only get one dial in the SS sub and thats black, or Sub date black dial/bezel or green dial/bezel 116610LV as for the ceramic being special thats down to opinions. In the real world its just a slither of very expensive ceramic to replace if needed. The 16610 sub date has changed very little since its launch way back in 1988 with the cal 3135.Now we have the 116610 ceramic different style case and bracelet, but still uses the cal 3135, but now with the inhouse escapement parts but no big deal there. The 14060 Sub again has changed very little over the years around 2000 the change from the cal 3000 to the cal 3130 into the 14060M the M stands for modified movement.Late 14060M were COSC tested and will have certified chronometer on the dial but exactly the same movement as the non tested model. And now we have the ceramic 114060M which is now basically a 116610 without the date complication.

Submariner would be my choice over the Submariner Date.

Hey - thanks ... can you tell me why? I feel like the date is such an integral function to a watch for me - which is why I haven't seriously considered the Daytona over the Sub. But it seems like a lot of people prefer it sans date. Is this an aesthetic question or a function one?

I prefer the Submariner for two reasons: first of all, I think the clean and symmetrical dial leads to a more aesthetically pleasing watch.

Second of all, I like the way it pays homage to the original Submariner, since the Submariner Date was not available until many years after it had been in production.

Go big as they say a WG blue smurf or if you must YG blue dial...... nothing wrong with a TT but if you wanted a DD might as well stay in the gold camp. Buy second hand is my tip.

I flipped a lot and came to this. SubC Date, SD4000, DSSD, Hulk, SubC Date again and finally THE SUB.

I have a feeling this will stay.

IMO I would go with the submariner with black dial. It is a classic watch that you can not go wrong with.

Yes, the used ceramic subs will be the same as the watches you'd buy new and yes, they do tendo to hold their value batter than almost everything else in the world of watches.

As for the model, which one makes you skip a beat?
