The time old question
Rolex vs Grand Seiko (please give me the chance to elaborate).
So recently I decided to buy my first nice watch. I've been into watches for a long time, but never had the chance to wear a good watch before (unsafe home country, recently moved to a safer place). After a lot of research I had my mind set on a Rolex 116000 Oyster Perpetual blue dial, arabic numerals. It looked amazing on pictures and it's 36 mm, which is perfect for me. So after literally months of trying to decide what would be my fist watch I went into the Rolex AD to buy the thing. I got in, asked immediately for the right watch by the reference number and got to hold it in my hands for the first time... It was a huge disappointment. I cannot stress enough how underwhelmed I was by the watch. It felt upsettingly light, the finishing was incredibly simple, the hands were way to thin... Overall, my feeling was "this is nothing special". So I looked at a few other models and had the same overall impression. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that they felt cheap or badly made or anything like that. But holding them on my hand I just could not "feel the price" of the watch. I remember holding it and asking myself "Where are the 6000 dollars? This doesn't justify the price in a million years". So I left the Rolex AD having bought nothing and went home. A few days later a visited the Grand Seiko AD, to see the 2nd place on my list, the SBGA085. When I held it for the first time my impression could not have been more different than what I had with the OP. The watch felt substantial, the finishing was espectacular, the hands were an absolute work of art, and the perfect smooth sweep of the spring drive movement was just the cherry on top. It wasn't perfect (the power reserve indicator for example is unnecessary in my opinion), but it felt like something special. I am not saying that it's a better watch than the OP, but it just felt and looked like something worth thousands of dollars. And the GS was 2 thousand dollars cheaper than the Rolex... So I bought GS and started wearing it as my daily watch. After a few weeks I was passing by the Rolex AD and decided to get a second look at the Oyster Perpetual. Maybe my first impression was wrong, it looked so good in pictures... But this time I had my GS for comparison. I can tell you that side by side the diference was even more clear. To my eyes, they didn't even look like the same class of watches, almost like comparing a Submariner with an Oris Aquis (both nice, but one clearly superior). I know this is Rolex Forums, so I am probably going to get murdered for this, but what are your thoughts on what I just said? I know Rolex is completely in-house, have their on foundries, movements that last forever, great resale value... and Grand Seiko is hard to service, SD is not purely mechanical, have the "it's just a Seiko" factor. But side by side Rolex watches look so pedestrian compared to Grand Seikos IMHO. So what's your take on the time old question Rolex vs Grand Seiko? PS: I don't mean to start a fight, just wanted to share my experience and hear the well informed opinion of you guys. PS 2: Some eye candy, because why not?
