Strap color, brown to black?

I know this is highly subjective. Was wondering what your thoughts are on going with a black strap instead of the existing brown on my beloved ALS Datograph in pink gold. I'd be sticking to the same crocodile hide.

Welcome your opinions!

The pink gold case looks better with the existing brown strap. The black dial would still compliment a black strap though.

Thanks for the input guys. The idea is to tone it down a bit so that it's a bit more casual.

How about changing to a lighter shade of brown then? I feel a black strap would actually make it more of a formal look.

I think you can go black, dark brown, or light brown

The current setup combines warm colors and it will look less formal (or more joyful). You can wear a black leather strap w/o issues, but it will change the nature of the setup to a more formal one.

You can also include a charcoal/dark grey option instead of just black.
Buy a couple of cheap straps from eBay or the likes of Strapcode, and see which you feel works for you.
After that you can buy a custom or oem one without worrying you've wasted a fair bit of money to satisfy your curiosity.

I think any of the above listed straps will work and give the watch a completely different look. Great watch.

A black strap is going to do the opposite of making it more casual.

Agreed. The plan is to go with perhaps a lighter shade of brown.

Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions.

Black would make this a lot more dressier, it has a casual feel to it on brown

Black is less casual. If anything, get a lighter tan strap with some funky off-color stitching (like blue).

Tan on black might be nice. Another this is moving away from croc, which is inherently dressy. Maybe buffalo or shell cordovan?

I may need to play experiment with a few different hides. Another great idea in moving away from croc...

Thanks again for the great suggestions.

If you're familiar with the Pantone Color reference system then you will understand the differences between "Warm" and "Cool" color shades. A RG watch leads to warm shades. I would skim through different fora for pics of rg watches and see what strap variations appeal. Then go to an AD or Boutique to see what's available. A friend with the 1st generation Data in pt found an amazing cognac croc strap sold by IWC. Lots out there to discover!

Personally, if that were my watch (and boy I wish it were!) I would get a strap made from blue Horween shell and a strap made from #8 shell. In fact, that's not my watch, and I have blue and #8 Horween shell straps. ;)

I am a big fan of switching up the straps to get a different look. A lot cheaper than buying a new watch. I say go for it!

Try something like a tan colored strap but check it in person before you buy it

i would change it, but for me i really struggle with straps in any other color besides black. browns are particularly hard as i don't really wear brown at all.

If it wasn't for the strap i would probably already have a 5524g. I still may, but its the strap color that has been the hang up thus far.

pretty sure the Dato in Pt i recently tried on has that strap and i really liked it. It was not a deep black for sure and struck me as more toward the charcoal color.

That is what i would get.
