Second hand goes backward

I don't wear my 16610 everyday, I was going to wear it yesterday, I wind it and the second hand start going backward then stop. I search it online, it looks like the mainspring is broken. My question is,
1. Do I have to bring to RSC to fix or I can bring to local watch smith ?
2. How much should it cost?
3. Anyone knows any trustable watch repair shop in San Francisco ?

Thanks for any input, please school me....

No experience with what you are seeing but my only recommendation would be to take it to RSC, I personally would only trust them servicing my Rolex watches.

I can't help you directly but there are some great options open to you in the US.
Others here will chime in shortly.

I would send it to Beverly Hills RSC or one of the highly respected independents in the US.

RSC. Good luck to a speedy repair.

I believe there's a Service Center in San Fransisco? Although I don't think it's an RSC, it has received good marks from our members out there who have used it.

Perhaps one of them will be along to give more details.

I believe her store might be a distance from you so you'd probably have to ship it but she has received outstanding reviews on the forum:

Of course Rolex repair center (now an independent) in San Francisco is awesome (Giovanni), but it is traditionally a long wait and pretty pricey at about $900+.

I used 'World Time' in San Jose (yes, a bit of a drive for you) and got fantastic service from them. Lower price, and also a 3 year warranty. Highly recommend them. The owner 'Son' knows his watches, he has done a lot of work for ADs in San Jose in the past.

The RSC is at 210 Post St in SFO. Giovanni will surely give you an estimate. They're also some other Jewelers that do Rolex repairs in the same building. If not, I suggest that you call Leo at Official Time Watch. He for sure can help. Super reasonable where a Rolex is concerned. Good luck!

Larry didn't ask how you broke it, he simply told you it's a broken mainspring.

Sorry, I'm not questioning him. I wonder if I did something wrong to the watch, I just want to know the cause of my problem, maybe I can avoid it happen again in the future. People wear their Rolex for years without any problem, why my .....?

There's no way to avoid it and it's a maintenance item that is replaced at service.

Post St. RSC is an authorized service center...in fact one if the oldest!

It happens. mainsprings are the single major failure point since the mechanical watch was first conceived.
Automatic winding movements are more resilient by design but not impervious to the problem.
You did nothing wrong what so ever except draw the short straw.

It's a mechanical watch.
Machines occasionally break.
The beauty of a watch like a Rolex is that it can always be repaired for decades into the future. Even a lifetime.

Even a digital watch can fail.

'Setrak's watch repair' on Post St is great and much better than the now defunct RSC.

I can appreciate the Wear and Tear re:metal fatigue, but as the OP mentioned, he hardly wears it, like I, with my DJ.
.
Find it odd, and surprising, that the main spring should go ( and a crown, last year, in my case) for a 'young' watch (2008).
Not overly impressed..

Stuff happens.

Servicing happens 5-7-10 years.

Your watch is 10 years old. Do your other automatic watches perform markedly better?

I am not tossing my watches out if a mainspring breaks. It's a piece of metal. Metal breaks. Life goes on.
