As you remember, a few months ago I agreed to help a business (parters are very close friends of mine) with the parts that were not working right. This is in an industry in which they were -at some point- the absolute leaders and now have fallen to God knows which place. Even on that place, the business has hefty sales, so my initial guess was that the partners had little interest in it.

After many headaches, visits, talking -and then apologizing- to customers, we close a nice job, for a customer for which we did a good job last time but had some issues in the process. This is the PERFECT time to grab the bull by the horns, make it RIGHT and fix, once and for all, the internal problems.

I take EVERYTHING I do personally and either make it the absolute BEST or not make it at all; so I jumped in to lead this new project from the early stages.

We (partners and myself) had agreed to meet today at noon (lunch in Mexico is usually 2pm) followed by lunch; with the clear goal to review plans, finalize budgets and issue initial proposals. With that in mind, I called ALL involved parts (except partners) for a 8:00 am meeting. We spent over two hours reviewing processes, pinpointing problem areas/tasks and fixing a flow chart with deadlines and responsable parties. In the end, a HUGE improvement. We are ready to jump in, with a fresh mindset, and make this OUR INSIGNIA project. THE way to do it; be the BEST or go home.

I thanked everyone, who left with high spirits and eager to do whatever it takes to make the BEST.

Meeting was over, so I went downstairs to grab coffee, back to meeting room (where I am typing this) and wait for the noon meeting.

Well, I just got a Whatsapp from the partners. Not even a call. There are two more ongoing projects, so they decided to go to one of the job-sites to 'check it out', so they cancelled the meeting. Why? Well, because they felt the other job, an ongoing project, was more important.

I reviewed earlier today project costing and profit/loss on some previous jobs, and it is a MESS! They have NO idea how much they make or if they make a profit at all! Some jobs loose money, some have a ridiculous (not even 4%) profit and some have hefty profits....in the end, they have a big cashflow with no idea on how much -if any- they are MAKING. The fact that you see money in the account does not mean you are in the black.

I am furious!!! I agreed to help them with a small pay (this way there should be commitment on both ends....trust me, it is a V E R Y small pay), yet, they just do not care!!!! How the ^*)@#%%@) am I supposed to help and fix?????? Now I understand the root of everything.

Sorry for the rant. I need a tequila. Or two. Wednesday is over. Period.

sorry to hear that. I've had some issues with guys who used to be friends. One just completely tried to ruin my reputation calling me a bullshitter to a bunch of mutual associates in a public forum. In my case it stemmed from a political difference in opinion but Jesus have some balls and talk to me directly; sounds like these guys should have made time for you, even a call.

Sounds like a good opportunity to invest in their competition. They'll drive this one into the ground eventually. Tell them there was a typo and your fee is actually 10x what you quoted. There's a good chance they'll just pay it and head out for a quick 18.

Sheez. A simple call, but I guess you have to be INTERESTED to make that call.....

Gerardo. Your exasperation is well understood and kudos to your 'best of intention' efforts.

With the exception of child-rearing and various private/personal issues involving those who are close to us, sometimes a "if it's not important to you, then it's not important to me" attitude/conveyance is the best alternative route.

After all, you don't want to be Atlas carrying the entire world upon your shoulders, especially amongst those who are easily distracted and/or seemingly preoccupied with other 'pertinent issues'.

You should've negotiated an expense account as part of your compensation. Then maxed the heck out of it!

Good luck with this one.......

Hi G, I have a question. While vacationing in Cancun several years ago, the bar at my hotel made a delicious hot drink called a Mexican coffee. It was poured in a clear glass and looked like it had layers to it. I believe it had Kahluah, tequila, coffee and heavy cream. Are you familiar with this recipe? Sorry for the threadjack Cheers! Jaime

Sounds like an incredibly frustrating day, G! I'm glad it's over and everything they're going through is making some sense now based on this (I can imagine).

I guess you just can't help someone that doesn't truly want to be helped. You gave it your all but they clearly couldn't be bothered. It amazes me how they expect someone to come in and transmogrify this situation.

Either way, I'm glad you were able to relax after that stressful debacle. You're a good guy, Gerardo!

It could be about 10 different drinks! Here you go: https://www.kahlua.com/en/drinks/

I can relate to much of what you say.

I recently pulled out of a partnership due to a very irresponsible partner. I literally gave him my shares. He said "do you know something I don't know"?

I quitely bowed out once we finally dug out of debt. And it was one of the best business moves I ever made.

Partnerships can be wonderful. They can also be terrible. I've found it's best that I'm in control. Or someone else is. One way or another.

...as long as someone IS in control (other than Kevin, he chose that name a long time ago ). Here, the biggest problem is that no one is leading. This is a ship cruising at fast speed, with a lot of staff but no one knows a) WHERE the ship is going and b) if it is floating or sinking

Not sure how invested you are.

Might be time to jump ship. That's a bad situation. Best not to be liable.

I'm ok rushing it when I'm at the wheel. Not ok when it's someone else.
