A salty question

Hey everybody,

I am lucky enough to be going on a Birthright trip to Israel this winter and am, of course, thinking about watch escapades. My collection consists of a Tudor Bronze and a Speedy Pro, and I am planning on just taking the Tudor with me for the trip.

On the trip, we'll be taking the obligatory dip/mud bath in the Dead Sea. I searched through the forum and found another member who asked if it'd be safe to take his Sub (I think) into the extremely salty environment - the general consensus was "go for it." Thus, I was planning on throwing the Bronze on a nato and jumping right in, but then I came upon this thread...

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...alvanic+bronze

It seems as though a few Black Bay Bronze owners have experienced a bit of insert disintegration, likely due to galvanic corrosion (I have gotten mine wet, but it has not seen salt water as of yet). I don't know if there will be a hotel safe or other secure place for me to leave the watch while I'm at the Dead Sea, but I would really like to take it along for the trip as a whole. You know, make some memories, yada yada yada...

I guess what I'm getting around to is this: my gut feeling is to throw it on a nato, get salty and muddy, have a good time, and just give it a nice, freshwater soak and rinse after I'm out of the Dead Sea. Does this sound reasonably safe regarding the corrosion issue, or would the hive mind recommend otherwise?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, and here are a couple pics just for kicks.

-Isaac

Man, my thoughts are what a great trip. And how cool it will be to dunk your watch in the Dead Sea...for me, it wouldn't make any difference which one.

I'm thinking the same thing. What an extraordinary life event. I say take the Tudor, integrate it into your journey, muddy it up, and if it changes, that'll become part of its soul. Have a wonderful adventure. Sounds !!

If their is an issue with corrosion it will be accelerated in the Dead Sea. Good excuse to buy a sub? Either way congrats and safe travels!

My worries exactly. Maybe they'll have a watch washing station for when we get out of the water

You might be on to something there. Take a large bottle of tap water with you and rinse it off as soon as you're done. Safe trip and enjoy

Great trip. The Dead Sea is SALTY!! You'll find out you had little scratches and grazes on your body you never knew you had!! There are shower and fresh water facilities there, so take it, enjoy it and rinse it. Shalom.

I definitely think a large CamelBak is in order for this trip.

Thanks, everyone, for your well wishes and advice. I'm beyond excited to finally be making this journey. I'll be sure to post pictures upon my return at the least (not that I'm even leaving for another three months lol). Let's see how the Bronze handles a little salt

Shalom, my friends

The Dead Sea is extremely salty, it is 10 times as salty as the ocean. I have never swim with watch there. In fact you can't swim in Dead Sea because your "swimming" similar to floating.

I can see why you'd want to take it, but honestly given the potential for corrosion I'd leave it at home. If they can get destroyed in the normal ocean, imagine what the Dead Sea would do to it!

Personally, I'd either get a beater of some sort to travel with, or use this as an excuse to get a new watch. I personally find that Seikos, while not the most luxurious, stand up to the abuse of travelling rather well for such a low cost.
