16800 Advice Needed for a First-Timer Vintage Rolex Buyer
Hi all,
I have been into vintage subs for the past 10 days after trying on a double red sea-deweller. I have the opportunity to buy the following watch from a private owner, who bought it from a well respected dealer (link below). I have no idea what is the right value for this watch. https://www.hqmilton.com/timepieces/...ner-16800-5058 Pros: I like the uniformity of the patina, and the condition of the case and dial. Cons: Missing lume on the stem of the hour hand, plus a replaced pip (or bezel insert). What would be considered a steal? What would be considered overpaying? |

Also, is this the right first step in vintage Rolex?

If I’m reading your post correctly, I’m assuming that you’re only ten days into vintage watches in general (not just Subs). If that’s the case I’d slow down and really get to know the various sports models. There’s a lot to learn and a lot to appreciate when it comes to the Rolex brand. Regarding market prices for vintage watches, don’t let the seemingly endless movement upward turn you into a frightened impulse buyer. Once you’ve settled on the watch that really speaks to you, be patient and go after it. If you don’t land it there will always be another opportunity. Lastly re: 16800 matte dial without box + papers...anything under 7k for an honest timepiece is a very good deal, and anything over $8500 is a bit rich (excluding examples in exquisite condition, recently serviced, important provenance, etc.). ————— Instagram: @onthedial |

OP: Slow down bro! 10 days in the vintage market is insufficient to educate yourself and make a good buy. Nothings going nowhere! There’s plenty of 16800s around, and other 5- and 4-digit watches. That’s a good first buy, but So is 1016, 1675, 1680, 16550, 14270, 16700, 16013, etc etc.
