Should I? DateJust With Custom Non Factory Dial
Hi forum!
Hope and trust you are well. I needed some advice on a potential new buy. I've recently developed a liking to steel and gold - two tone. Im looking at a watch I've found. Reliable seller but comes with no box or papers. keeping good time. A DateJust 160XX with a custom non original strap (leather) but more importantly a Black Onyx Dial. I like the dial a great deal but wonder if it's actually worth buying since it's not original to the watch. The other option is to use that money and get a Tudor BlackBay Dark or even a S&G tho ideally I don't want to spend more money. Any advice? Thinking down the line if I ever need to sell etc. |

I personally wouldn’t get any watch with aftermarket dial. I do like the look of that black onyx dial but no hour markers would make me go crazy.

I really don’t see a great loss as long as you pay for a 16000 series watch in a strap. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That watch without the bracelet and aftermarket dial should be pretty cheap... relatively. It should be priced accordingly. If you buy it right you shouldn't loose much if you sell it on. So if you like it, buy it. If you sell it and don't get what you paid, chalk it up as the cost of enjoying the watch.

So actually that dial may be authentic. But maybe not original to that head. |

$3,400 sounds incredibly high to me too. I reckon something nearer $2,000 would be fairer, considering the after-market intervention. If you paid anywhere $3,000 for that watch you'd stand a massive risk of losing a heap of cash when you flipped it on.

I would not. No box, no papers, no bracelet, no original dial, no deal. Save yourself some time and money and find something that works better.

Not keen on the dial at all, you may as well buy a replica as far as I'm concerned. To top it off no box or papers either, not for me. No offence!

If that was an original Rolex dial that someone modified, maybe.
If that's a dial that someone else made and slapped the word Rolex on, it's not aftermarket, it's counterfeit. That price is ridiculous.

Exactly. I would give the Tudor S&G a look at that price point.

There are so many other similar Rolex pieces out there in the market.
This one has no papers, it carries a non-factory dial, and is priced high. Why would you rush to buy? Be patient and the right watch will come to you at the right time. Many times we forget this because we think that if we pass on a piece there will be none like it further down the road.

i'd buy a Jocke push, pull or drag special as a donor and mod it myself with OEM parts.
can be done for less than the quoted price and any DJ from the 60's can be used. you can always get a BBY line watch. be creative with this exercise. |

Price way too high, like 2K overpriced. That case has seen some action on the polishing wheel as well. Definitely pass on this one. If you like the look, take CJ's advice above.
You can acquire a nice case set and put in a onyx dial pretty easily for less money and it will be a much nicer watch.

The bracelet and original dial will set you back $2000-$2500. Keep that in mind when pricing this watch.

On top of the high price and hard time selling it back (forget about the price, even if you allow yourself a rather small loss if you negotiate it well you will probably have to be really patient if you want to find another buyer), servicing it will make you depend on an independent watchmaker for Rolex will not touch it.
