Seeking Rolex Purchasing Advice

It is my current plan to pick up a 116710BLNR or LN for my birthday at the end of the 2018. The knowledge of the people on this forum has shown me this may be the worst time of year to buy due to stock shortages. While I would like to have the AD experience for this milestone birthday it has been proven this may be impossible for my exact birthday and not worth paying 8.25% tax just for a bottle of water and a handshake.

All this being said my current idea is to wait until about April (still holding out for a possible SS BLRO at Bezel ) then going to some AD's and seeing what I can get and not worry about exact birthday....I mean it's in the same year right . Since I don't have a relationship with any AD's I am assuming I should just get on a list at a few and see how that goes for awhile and if nothing else buy from a trusted member here. Does this sound like a solid plan? Any advice from the experts would be greatly appreciated.

If you dont want to pay sales tax then go to your closest out of state AD. Buy the watch and have them mail it your house. No sales tax doing it that way.

(And dont hold your breath on a SS pepsi. Not happening.)

The best way to buy luxury jewelry is to have your money ready and when you see it, buy it.

I have thought about doing the out of state route but I am in Texas so just getting out of the state is a pretty good drive. I could possibly hit an AD when traveling but if things stay the same not sure I could just walk into an AD on any given day and pick up a BLNR. I will definitely try if I find myself around one.

It's the seeing it part that has me worried from what I have heard on here.

Do you know anyone who lives out of state you could have it shipped too? The reverse will work. The AD has to agree to the whole shipping thing though as it could put them in a bind with the IRS.

I am sure there are multiple AD's in and around Houston go to all of them and try to build a relationship and discuss the possibilities of getting on their list. Make them confident you are buying it for you and put deposit down if necessary. You might be shocked how quickly you get one.

All this said and no more premium than is being asked for this one on the Gray Market I would just go that route and get it when you are ready. I will admit buying new is great but it is the fact it is a new watch not the AD experience that makes it great.

Oh and don't wait on the account of a steel pepsi coming out at Basel...not going to happen!

I will definitely be going to AD's in my area in the new year. I have two within walking distance of me so I am sure building a relationship...or being really annoying will be possible quiet quickly.

Guess I will just have to shoot for the PM BLRO in the future.

Nothing at all illegal for a company to ship a product to an out of state buyer and the buyer pay no sales tax. That is the norm.

Write out a check to the AD for what you are willing to pay and hand it to them. Tell them it is the only check that you brought with you. When the manager has a check in his hand for that much money and he knows that you do not have another one, they typically say yes. Offer must be reasonable.

Derek, I don't know what part of Texas you are but if you're in Houston you can visit the Rolex Boutique inside The Galleria. They might have the BLNR in stock but no discount.

I got mine in Cancun with discount and you can get your tax back when going back to the States.

I will keep this in mind. I do get to Mexico a couple times a year so this may also be an option for me.

I can also make it to the Galleria but I wont go near that place until about February now.

I will be ready to make my purchase once Holidays are over so I will just hope I am in the right place at the right time as I don't think I could ever pay a premium for this.

My thought would be to buy from a TS on the forum. You would greatly increase the odds of getting it on your actual birthday, and you could always ask them to include a bottle of water with the watch.

Unless of course, the "AD experience" is worth 8.25% tax to you. And then, by all means do that.

I would call around first and once you find one, pay the deposit and make a trip out to get it.
OR
If you have someone you can trust that live out of state, ask the local dealer to ship it to that person and ask him to FEDEX it back to you.

I was gonna ask a local dealer to ship a watch to my in laws, but later found a dealer 600 miles away. I flew out for the weekend to get it.

Sounds like a good idea, but the buyer must not carry any extra cash and credit card either..

This is correct It is then up to the watch buyer to pay the use tax in the state they live in. Most don’t though.

Not sure what the IRS has to do with sales tax. Sales tax revenues go to the state and local authorities. It becomes a state issue not an IRS issue.

I purchased my first DD at a San Diego AD (at a discount) and had it shipped to a Las Vegas hotel. I saved big money...much, much more than enough to pay for the flight and my weekend hotel stay.

I do agree with you that an "AD experience" is not worth any additional percentage/cost in taxes. Just as the OP, I am also on my search for my first Rolex and looking at all the options. What exactly is a "TS" and what type of warranties do they normally carry? At this high cost, I would feel much better buying with the option at a Rolex backed warranty. Could you PM me some information on reliable forum sellers? I would certainly appreciate it.
