Daytona finally arrived! but...

I live in Chicago, but my family are in Taiwan. Beginning of this year, I asked my brother to put his name on the list for a ceramic Daytona at a authorized dealer where we have bought a few watches from.
My brother called me this morning saying a lady at the dealer said they just got a black dial Daytona in and we are on top of the list. Even though white dial is my first choice, I would take a black one any day. I immediately asked my brother to contact the lady and told her we will pay a deposit over the phone to hold it and will pick it up the next day.
MSRP in Taiwan is about NT400,000 (USD 13,000). My brother asked if 20% deposit is enough. She said sure, that would be NT100,000 (USD 3600). That's when my brother asked the question, "how much is it?" The lady responded "sticker price is NT400,000, we are selling it for NT500,000".

I told him to tell her we are not interested. But I was pretty upset. At least in US, the dealers do not overcharge.

Pretty common in Asia for ADs to do that. Sucks for their loyal customers.

In Taiwan, they do. But I thought that's if you want it immediately. I thought if we put our name on the list and wait patiently, it will be the sticker price like ROLEX suggested, when our time comes. We were wrong. those greedy dealers....

Right I get paying above retail to avoid the wait, but why wait and over pay. Good move on passing..

So much for establishing a “relationship” with that AD. Goes to show there’s no customer loyalty.

Hey, it’s probably still lower than gray market. I see some GD’s prices are climbing and now asking about 50% OVER MSRP!

On the Rolex web site it clearly states all prices are Rolex's suggested retail price inclusive of V.A.T.So in theory they could charge what they like which unfortunately some do simple answer walk away and do not pay.

I'm sorry to hear that, but good for you to deny it.
Paying their price just enables them.

Really bad that they try to do that. They say they are not allowed to offer discounts... so they should not be allowed to charge over MSRP.

Sorry but this is not news in Asia, the next person on the list would probably happily buy it. No loss for the AD.

well, I thought that is the price if you want one right away and they "source" it for you from another dealer and you pay a premium for it. I didn't know that you still have to pay a premium when you are on the waiting list. That's just messed up.

Exactly. Why is there a need to wait when they're just going to charge you they grey market price anyways?

These ADs are getting away with this kind of behavior because people are feeding that greed by paying these ridiculous markups. But when the economy tanks, they'll be begging for business again while forgetting how they screwed their loyal customers over.

Sorry to hear they did this; time to align with a different dealer. Obviously customer loyalty means little to the current on.

I was just in taiwan two weeks ago. Thought I’d try my luck while I was there to look for a white dial Daytona. Called AD’s all the way from Taipei down to Kaohsiung. That’s how much AD’s sell them for $498000NTD. Everyone in line pays that price. If your turn comes and you pass up on it the next person will gladly pick it up. Found a grey market shop selling one for $565000NTD. PCHOME website at the time had two sellers both asking $628000NTD for theirs.

I think most ADs in Asia sell popular steel models for above retail. A supposed clampdown was reported in SG earlier this year, but I do not know if this was thoroughly enforced. Sucks, but if it is any consolation, the ask price here where I am is higher than what you'd be paying.

Or the ADs just backdoor the SS sports models into the grey market.
