Thoughts on precious metal Rolexes.

I love the 228238 and the 116618LN. I have had a 36mm Rolex Day Date that I bought new back in 2001. I paid $20,000 for that watch from an AD. I made the huge mistake of selling it. Now looking back on what they are going for now, even after 16-17 years, they don't really hold their value well. I know my 116040 and 126600 will fair very well over the next 10-20 years, assuming I keep them.

What are the forum members thoughts on PM Rolex watches?

Many here (not most, not all) aspire to them. But those that do also realize buying one isn't an investment.

If you want the watch in a precious metal then buy it. It is the same watch as the stainless steel version.

This is high end luxury jewelry, nothing about the price will ever make sense.

I look at it like buying something like a gold or platinum wedding ring. You don't really worry about value.

Of course, even my wedding ring is steel, so clearly PM is of no interest to me.

Gotta buy it used, and even then it will never hold its value like a SS watch.

I want one, I do, but I'm having trouble getting over the idea of a watch on my wrist that costs as much as a new car. Not a great new car, but still, you know, a car, like a Honda.

haha ok for real. Obviously not the best "investment" but no modern Rolex should be considered such. If you buy smart you don't take too bad of a hit in the event you need to sell. The ROI in my case is the enjoyment and smile this watch brings me.

All excellent thoughts. I know a watch is not inherently a great investment, but I just don't want the value to drop like a rock. I was just looking at the 116713LN and the 116718LN. Both beautiful. I have owned the TT GMT master II (116713LN) but traded it. I love TT Rolex watches but sometimes tire of them. You guys like the TT Rolex models?? I do have the DJ41 in TT rose gold and chocolate dial. I wear it almost daily to the office.

If you really want one, then buy it to enjoy, not as an investment. Buy used but new if possible as opposed to new ad the AD as it will depreciate about 25 percent immediately and you can get one from a trusted seller here that has stickers etc. but already took the hit. It may not be an investment, but it is a place to park your money until you need it again, for say, another Rolex. I love the YG Sub blue or black.

I thought once that PM is total waste of money, which it is, if it’s thought moneywise.

The heft and feel of PM watch is so enjoyable that i just can’t describe it well enough. Everytime you lift it, slip it on your wrist and after click of the clasp it lets you feel the heft. And high thermal conductivity makes bracelet feel like it is melting on your wrist.

I enjoy SS watches as well, but PM brings a new dimension of enjoying your watch. It has calming feeling of modern luxury. And Rolex offers lifetime lasting, independent, technology with it, so with PM horology is enjoyed to it’s fullest.

Gold DJs 116238 (Rare since people buy DDs instead nowadays. I think many people aren't even aware Rolex still produces a men's gold DJ) and DDs depreciate heavily especially when a new reference comes out. Think of it like Rolex's S Class. The DD2s still go for around the same or a little more than the 40s because they have more gold/platinum content. I don't know if that will be the case down the road. Only time will tell how the DD2s (and DJ2s for that matters) are judged decades from now. Both are pure luxury but they don't retain value well. If you like them that shouldn't stop you from buying either since there is no substitute for a DD.

PM sports models are a different story. While they don't appreciate like the SS models, they at least hold their value much better especially if you buy them at GM prices or at an AD for a good price. PM Daytonas do the best followed by Subs (especially the LB) and GMTs.

Bottom line: The DDs are beautiful watches and if you want one get one and forget about how much it'll be worth later on. Otherwise buy a sports model. I must say that there is nothing quite like a new president bracelet on the wrist. It's the most beautiful bracelet Rolex produces imo.

PM is more about luxury and feel, and you have to pay for that, however you can usually get a good discount on these and if Rolex have a price rise or a supply squeeze as some countries have seen recently, then you can actually get out even on your PM watch or even make a little profit.

For me I wouldn't buy PM new, there just seem to be good buys on the pre owned market.

Go for it!! You will enjoy it and that is worth the price IMO. As far as "investment" goes there are a LOT of things you could spend your money on that lose much more money much faster. For example, buy a high end home theater system now think of selling that in 10 years vs the Rolex...

I have been flipping watches for over a decade, and had great fun doing it. No regets. They were all stainless steel watches. I have always wanted a quality gold timepiece. But it must be a keeper. That is how I view precious metal watches. Nothing compares to the Day-Date IMO, and I am glad it is precious metal as it makes the watch even more special.
