Issue with a seller need advice on AP ASAP

I need everyone’s advice since this hasn’t happened to me before on TRF. I put down a deposit on a watch that needed to be polished 2 weeks ago and the seller told me it would be ready Monday. I txt him Monday and he responded by saying the watch had gone for a polish. I paid \\$500 to secure the watch and I’m still waiting I’ve seen other AP’s n been approached by multiple sellers to buy. I have sold many watches on the forum and beyond. I don’t like making my people wait for their watches. At the least I keep them updated on progress nothing from this seller? I’m sick of waiting and he hasn’t been in contact which is not making me happy. Also he is having the watch polished from a non AP service center and I don’t know if they will ruin the case and bezels sharpness as the dent was minor but it was on the bezel and the edge of the beveled part in particular!

What should I do?.......wait or ask for my deposit back and call it quits? I understand he is busy but jeez send me a message and tell me what’s going on nothing? I do not want to disclose the sellers name as I don’t feel it’s right as of now!

Cheers all.

Sounds like you need to reach out to him and express your concerns. I wouldn’t want any APRO polished by a 3rd party.

I agree. I would send to AP and have them polish it instead and purchase for less. Contact him and ask for the money back as you don’t feel comfy with his lack of communication.

Personally I wouldn't rush the seller as the work needs to be done properly, for that reason I would have specified that AP do the work and maybe waited a bit longer and paid a bit more.

If the perfect watch has been offered to you outside of this deal and doesn't need work then go with that if you're in a rush.

Before you paid the deposit how long did the seller quote for the work? I had a similar situation with watchfinder about 15 years ago, I paid a deposit on a used Safari and was going to trade a Daytona but they said that the watch needed to be refinished and it took so long that in the end I got my deposit back. I think this happened on around the 6 or 8 week point after paying the deposit.

If the work is limited to the bezel then familiarise yourself with how sharp the edges are when new as these look terrible when rounded off with poor refinishing.

Thanks ash et al, he didn’t specify a return date he just said he would polish from his guy who can polish and he said he would get it on Monday. But it’s his lack of communication that’s kinda of putting me off. I’m not in a rush, I’m just expecting the same communication I give my buyers. I’ve been eyeing some Pateks too so im in a bind.....I don’t want to loose my deposit he didn’t specify it was non refundadable so he has to return it.

any other watch I wouldn't care.. but on an AP, the bezel is iconic, you ruin that and you will be miserable.. only AP should touch the bezel's that's my opinion...

lots of horror stories here of bad independent polish jobs. The geometry of the case is what makes an AP an AP. Once its gone its a tragedy.

Even AP messes up the cases sometimes. Prepare yourself for a very ”soft” case.

I think it was a smart move. I sure wouldn't trust a 3rd party to polish my AP...plus poor seller communication = no deal.

I think someone said a new SS Bezel is $850. Could just purchase a new one from Clearwater. (Dont quote me on the price but that is what I remember reading on here)

I had my ROC in clearwater recently and requested a quote for a new bezel and I cant remember the exact price (I chose not to get it) but I believe it was like $1300 with new screws as well.

I would agree with this as well and say that you made the right decision. Sometimes looking for a free lunch might not be worth the troubles

Good move.

Once a SS AP needs ”polishing”, I would rather buy a new bezel. It’s never done right. Not even by AP.

Is it just me?

I have never been in a situation with a TS needing a deposit.
