Glacier Blue vs Ice Blue Dial
Hi I have done a search but cant determine when Rolex changed the glacier blue to the ice blue dial for the platinum daydate. Does anyone know what year this occurred? It looks like it might have happened with the introduction of the Day Date 40 which was 2016 I believe? Does anyone know the year. I am also looking for the 36mm version.
Thanks

I thought the Presidents' Platinum Cal 3255 with the new Ice Blue dial was first introduced in Baselworld 2015...

I'm not convinced they're different. I think "ice blue" is just the name Rolex uses now.
Granted, the shade has changed a lot. But, it changed between a few hues even when it was still called "glacier." I don't think "ice" is any different than a late "glacier" dial. Early glacier: Later glacier: I could definitely be wrong, though. Rolex uses the terms "glacier blue" and "ice blue" separately on this page: Quote:

When I tried on a platinum DD2 a few years back, the blue dial was a lot paler blue to my 2008 platinum DD36 and also the new DD40 a few months back.

I don't have much to add, other than the DD40 ice blue seems to be more blue than the DDII which seems to have a hint of sea foam green at different angles.

Ice blue and glacier blue are interchangeable. That blue is only on the platinum models and may change hue slightly from year to year.

Glacier Blue vs Ice Blue Dial
Recently sourced the OEM blue diamond dial from the platinum 118206 for my WG DD, wonder if correct name is ice blue or glacier blue. Here besides a silver dial for color comparison:

The blue one looks silver to my eyes and the silver looks white-ish...

Glacier Blue vs Ice Blue Dial

That dial besides the glacier one is definitely silver, know as replaced it with this white dial: which is currently on my 18239: The glacier blue may look silver / light green in some angles as the color is very light. Here another picture of it: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Not sure what it's called officially, but it sure looks like glacier blue to me. Here's a pic I took of my Platinum Daytona against an actual glacier.

Interesting topic, but completely subjective. I worked as a feature film Colorist for 25 years, so I have some knowledge in this field.
Regardless of what Rolex decides to call it, there are additional parameters when discussing color beyond shades, or hue or professionally speaking the 'Chroma Phase'. Also, there is the 'Sauration', the amount or intensity of color and the "Luminence" and "Set-Up" which are, respectively, the amount of 'White' and 'Black' level present. Also, reflected light (movie screen) and direct light (TV screen) affect the colorimetry and should be considered when viewing an image. These are universal video / film terms but can also be applied to electronic photos. So, long story short - the blues being discussed are different but it seems like a case of different white and black levels (contrast) than different hue/tint/phase values. I refer to the pix of the watch not the silver dial photo. Not sure I'm articulating this properly. Regardless of what Rolex calls it, and more *important than anything* color is wildly subjective an the display device used is critical when discussing color parameters. (Our color corrections suites at work all had $75K Sony broadcast monitors. Even the room lighting used color corrected light bulbs at $60.00 each. Sorry for the length of this - if anyone wants more info on this interesting topic, please PM me anytime. Mark Sent from my SM-A520W using Tapatalk |

My impression is Rolex moved to the darker shade with the introduction of the DDII.

Thanks again. I should have touched on the huge difference in cell phone screens but that post was long enough! I'll say one thing: TRF members on this thread have *excellent* color perception.

Just for info, I had a stripped screw replaced on my 36mm in 2012 and they were calling it Ice Blue at the time. Not that it really matters I suppose, a rose by any other name ..
