First Rolex

Hi. I've been looking for a good few months now at various watch brands and also spoken to a couple of watch dealers about the best watch investment and it always comes back to a Rolex.

I have a Tag Heur Carrera calibre 5 which I wear daily, an old secura dive watch, Tag 2000 and a Omega Seamaster.

My ideal watch would be the rolex deep sea or submariner but these are currently out of my budget. So I've been looking at the Oyster or an Airking. I'm looking at a 2008 114210 for £2500 or oyster 116000 £2600 or oyster 1501 £2000.

I do also like the Breitling Navitimer or heritage for the similar money.

Any advice please would be appreciated.

Here's my advice. Save up until you can swing a sub or a Deep Sea. You are only going to lose money and frustrate yourself with the options you're thinking about.

OP this is good advice. I’ve been there before and you might as well save the aggravation

I've been in your spot. That is lusting for a rolex and settling for a dj because it was affordable but I never felt right until I finally had that sub, then the GMT, then another sub, then the AK. I hope you get the point.

Be patient and save for a sub. It is truly a beautiful watch and you won't regret it.

I was going to go down the same route you are thinking of. Was looking at a vintage thunderbird to get a Rolex on my wrist. Made the decision to spend more and go with the SubC. Im with other members on this one.

Like everyone has said, save up for the watch you really want. If you compromise, you'll always be disappointed. And coming from someone that has a Sub -- it's worth it.

Agree with the advice above. Definitely save for the watch you want. You’ll just be dissatisfied with what you get instead of the DS, and end up losing money when you sell whatever else you get.

Couldn’t agree more with everyone here. Please wait and save for the sub you want. I’m sure many can attest, sometimes we just want to get a Rolex on our wrist. When really if you don’t get the right one you will end up regretting it. And you will prolly flip for a slight loss and end up with the sub in the long run. I’ve personally made this mistake twice. I am now soon to purchase a new SubC date from my AD. then I can finally be the one watch guy I (and my wife) aspire to be. Trust us. It will be worth the wait.

Interestingly, I just bought this 1503 Oyster Perpetual Date on a leather strap.
This is my fifth Rolex and my first vintage Rolex and I can't tell you how much I am in love with this watch.

My first Rolex was the 114270 and to this day it is my favorite Rolex and the feeling I get each time I put on is indescribable.
I think the key to buying a new watch is to put it on your wrist.

Watch guys often speak of a watch singing to them, but whatever analogy you use, it is important that the watch resonates with you in a meaningful way.

I think if I had been thinking more clearly when I bought my first Rolex it would have been the 14060M, which I later bought, but having fallen for each watch for its own qualities, I have no regrets for having waited.
I know that I bought each one when it was the right time for me.

So, I suggest that you don't settle for any watch.

Get out there and find a watch that you really like that fits your budget now.

If you find it, buy it. If not, keep saving and keep looking.

In the meantime there is an abundance of watches that look great and cost a couple of hundred dollars that won't deplete your savings.

One of my favorite watches is this Orient Bambino that cost less than $200USD.

Let’s see the Sicura!

I missed out on a Sicura GMT a few weeks ago, still sad about it.

Thank you for the advice. To be honest it's going to be hard enough to calm down the Mrs if I spent a few £k on an AK let alone £5 or 6 on a sub at the moment. When the right one comes along I'll make the jump. From what I've read the Oyster or the AK isn't a bad investment?. Obviously they won't be such a shrewd purchase compared to the likes of say a Daytona or sub. But the AK or Oyster could possibly still good there value well ?

The OP 116000 is a very nice choice, love my blue one with Mercedes hands

If you really want a Submariner, I would save up for one or consider selling your other watches, which you may not end up wearing once you get a Rolex.

Save for what you want...don't settle for what you can afford today. You have a nice collection started. Otherwise you will be looking at other's watch you see and not enjoy yours.

Be patient and you will add the Rolex you want before you know it...AND it you will be able to celebrate the new time piece and the accomplishment of how you achieved it.

I’d personally take the 116000 over any currently made Rolex, but you’ll just regret it if you don’t get the one you want.

I’d recommend you stop trying to think of a Rolex as an investment. It may hold a good amount of its value, but with a very limited number of exceptions, it will not appreciate.

Buy the watch you want. If you can’t afford it, save. In a year or two, you will be able to afford it, and it will mean that much more to you.

I'm usually pretty impatient myself, but trust all of us when we say saving for a Sub or Deepsea is the best way to go. You'll end up regretting settling in the end. Take it from someone who's owned 14 different watches this year
