Daytona dial change

Hello. New to trf. Had a question. Lots of em actually but let’s start here.

I love the Daytona ice blue dial.

Seems like I only see it on the platinum Daytona.

Is there a version with the ice blue dial in stainless steel? (Love the platinum version but it’s a bit pricey for me).

Would it be totally taboo or impractical to buy a stainless in say white and have the dials switched?

Thank you for your opinions and knowledge in advance. Always trying to learn more about Rolex and appreciate all the people on this forum.

No. The dial you’re referring to is only for the platinum Daytona. Dials for the SS Daytona are only black and white.

You can do a dial change on any watch, but you’ll have to source and pay for it yourself. An independent watch maker will have to switch it out for you, as Rolex policy prevents these types of modifications.

The following pic is a white gold daytona that has had the dial and the bezel swapped to make it look like the platinum version. I don’t agree with this. And im sure many in TRF don’t agree with this type of change. It makes it a poser watch! But to each his own. (Keep in mind you dont need just the platinum version dial to pull this off. But you also need the platinum version bezel)

IMO, if one takes a SS or WG Daytona and slaps a PT dial on there, one is trying to pretend he has something he doesn't. Like taking a 328i and rebadging it a 340i.

For some reason, I have never heard of anyone doing it, but if someone took a WG Daytona and swapped in a SS dial, IMO that wouldn't be posing. It would be because they prefer the feel of PM but like the look of the SS dials. I'm not sure this has ever been done, but for some reason the reverse has been done a number of times.

That said, virtually no one looks at my watch and says, "ohhhh, platinum." So if one is trying to impress people, swapping a platinum dial into a SS or WG case is not going to have the effect you think.

This is a sign of the times. Years ago in the 80’s, custom/modified Rolex was in vogue. Today, Rolex has done their best to make any modifications very inconvienent for the owner.
That has moved the Rolex culture to only prefer unmodified watches. A modified Rolex these days is like the plague to most.
Those that want to bling out or modify their watches have moved to other luxury watch brands that are not so restrictive.

Although not the ice blue dial. Someone did take the blue dial from the WG Daytona and added it to a SS model. http://www.takuyawatches.com/product...-complete-set/

That blue dial is beautiful. But me personally I couldn’t wear it as a mod. Its WG or nothing. (And nobody ever comments on my watches but I still couldn’t do it.)

Ice blue dials are for platinum models! If you wanted to modify a stainless or white gold model you would have to go all the way to include the bezel to make it believable which would be a spendy proposition in its own right. Yet you would still only have a facsimile of what you really desire. Would others know? Probably not but you would. I love the Platona as well but a man has to know his current limitations. It is possible to love and admire a watch without owning it. Its cost prohibitive for me and many on this site. It may not always be though. In the meantime just enjoy watches that aren't too pricey for you.

Very true. I would just suck it up and get whatever model you want rather than going the mod route.

The Ice Blue dial is a signifier of platinum, so putting this on any other metal is disingenuous and I would not do it.

I think it would cost too much and it's an abomination.

It's your watch, you can do whatever you want.
Everyone has an opinion on this topic with varying degrees of acceptance.

Some remove the cyclops crystal with a cleaner no cyclops crystal.
Some change the older bracelets with the newer glide lock bracelet.
Some change the insert to green, black, blue.

Just know that when it comes time to sell/service, you need to change it back to spec.
