WG or Plat DD 36?

Probably going to pull the trigger soon on a 118239 or a 118206 either in addition to my 18038 or in lieu of it. Will be pre-owned. Price difference depending on the dial is about 25-30% for the platinum. I know this isn't an investment, but if I'm going into this arena, want to make sure I make a good buy.

Love the fluted bezel on the WG, but love the subtle sheen of Plat. Anyone wanna share thoughts?

Also, trying to do the Tahitian MOP. Is that popular?

P.S. Does fluted bezel make watch look bigger on wrist? I can rock a 36 but I don't want to worry about it looking diminutive.

The best and classic look is to get the only real Day Date...yellow gold. The look of pure natural yellow gold is amazing...the 36mm is the perfect size for it...put on a pair of old jeans, your converse sneakers, a tee shirt and an old sport jacket and you're right in the gold DD zone. And it is such a great useable watch. I even wore mine in the gym or on runs. Plus, in a tux or business suit...it is equally amazing. Wearing a white metal DD is like having a beautiful wife and then putting a sack over her head. Enjoy.

For me, the lack of fluted bezel on platinum takes it out of the running. I just don’t care for the smooth bezels. WG or YG DD are both awesome. I lean towards the YG even though the WG with green dial is beautiful.

OP has a YG 18038 already so that's covered (see avatar). That being said - go PT sine you do have the gold covered already.

Well, I disagree! Prefer white metal over yellow / rose metal on the DD's

WG fluted bezel is one of the staples.

I dislike the smooth bezel on the Pt, so I have DD36 in both white and yellow gold. Platinum is for the Daytona, and rose gold for AP.

About the Tahitian MOP. I think it gives the DD a unique look. As far as “popular”, I would have to say no.

Does a heavy watch bother you?

The 118239 will be about 30% heavier than your 18038 (about 179 grams). The 118206 will be much heavier at 227 grams.

Best of luck in your decision!

IMO it's not quite a day date without the fluted bezel....so white gold for me.

Platinum with a Glacier dial, please. I used to worry about the smooth bezel, but not any longer.

I am so torn! Definitely up for the Tahitian, but the bezel issue still weighing on me. As for heft, I love a substantial watch - makes it feel like dad’s Ulysses Nardine. So platinum is good. I think if it comes down to the $ WG will win. Can always get a third in platinum later ... of another model! (Daytona?!)

I love the smooth bezel much more than fluted. It helped draw me to the Pt model and with the ice blue dial

I’m not really a PM fan, but this WG 118209 is what I’d pick, being somewhat understated and sporty:

Last couple for tonight

Not sure if the fluted bezel makes the WG look larger or not....

I would choose WG, but I love the fluted bezel. The ice blue dial is awesome, but having the fluted bezel trumps it for me. Lots of cool dials on the WG too. I’d pick 40 over 36.

Yep. I like it, because it basically looks like a DJ with a day complication. I wish they made it in steel, but I have a similar Tudor, since they don’t.

Funny all the sudden interest in DDs and platinum over the last few weeks. Oddly tracks my own recent interest in wearing my WG DD again after a long Daytona run.

I’d buy a white gold and take the extra cash and buy another Rolex. I personally just don’t appreciate platinum enough to want to pay the premium.

I much prefer the fluted bezel option on both DD and DJ.

Too funny! Loved the jeans and converse visual. I could really picture it.

OP, if the choice is between WG or Plat, I'd go Plat and never look back!

This is my 60s WG 1803 matt Black Dial for your reference. It wear very comfortably on wrist and I highly recommend it. Worth to give the 1803 a try also.
