Is there a real crisis out there...?

In one week two AD called me for a DeepSea and a Milgauss GV...

I mean each AD had the two watches in stock...

Now, you can find on french advert websites a few DeepsSea even some under MSRP !

And a bunch of GV at MSRP and under too !

End of speculation ?
Hard times ?

Both models are still selling out at premium prices in SE Asia.

Crisis? I think so

I'm not sure how things are in Paris, but in NYC I began to notice a change at the end of the summer. Usually if I need to grab a cab in the morning I need to be in front of my building by 7:15 AM otherwise they are all taken. Starting in the late summer I was constantly noticing empty cabs even well into rush hour.
Three weeks ago I was called by my AD about the GV, I had been number 4 on his list, the three guys ahead of me backed out. I was very happy to take advantage and pick it up, but the fact that it dropped to me so quickly was note worthy. This is only the second GV my AD has seen since release.
So do we have a crisis? Or are people who are over-leveraged just not buying?
Or are people less likely to buy a Rolex when they've seen their 401k drop by 30% or more?

On the other hand I took my wife to Tourneau on Saturday and they were full of shoppers. I saw a PAM get picked up, a Cartier Santos and a Breitling while I bought my wife a SS/WG TOG. I got a very nice discount though.
The Tourneau rep said that my GV was the first she'd seen this year.
So the evidence of a slow down is there, but other signs are less clear.
Cheers,
J

Many folks are passing on GV's, Deep seas, and SS Daytonas due to the economy. We may see SS Daytona's placed out in the display cases very soon!

I'm pretty sure...

Just an example with an ad on a DeepSea

MSRP in France is 7100 euros

Antfer,

have you seen other signs of a slow down in France.
Nice pic of your GV by the way,
Cheers,
J

The recent price hike assault can't have helped much.

The IMHO implied rarity of these watches was just a hoax.

Now that buyers are backing out, i would be waiting and you will be getting these watches for less than MSRP instead of being still suckered into buying them full price.

I can see all AD's putting sales up soon and discounted heavily.

Hard times indeed. I was in Liverool this weekend and i've never seen so many sports models on display in the ADs windows. A few years back this was unheard of in the UK.

It doesn't surprise me that Rolex purchases would be affected worldwide by the slowing economy. At the same time, I am one of those who feel that the hype surrounding some of the models, like the DSSD and the Milgauss GV are a little overdone when it comes to claims of rarity. Even so, the Milgauss GV especially is on my list--I am a sucker for the green tinged crystal. I hope that the many initiatives taken by governments around the world will be successful and help all the economies rebound, including sales of Rolex.

I think it's safe to say that Rolex keeps it's inventory tightly under control to maintain the illusion of scarcity and to keep prices high. Fairly reliable sources told me earlier in the year that the problem of preventing fading of the GV crystal was the problem that kept these from being widely available.

I live near Pechanga Casino. Two years ago I had to get off the I-15 one exit down to avoid the big casino rush on Friday and Saturday evenings. It was crazy. Since then, we've seen the traffic dwindle and now I think they are in serious trouble as they don't get many gamblers throwing away their earnings. I hear it's just as bad in Vegas where my father-in-law said it was a ghost town. I keep getting fliers to stay there for deeply discounted rooms.

Just look at our sales corner right now, you can find 2 GV's at list and a SDDS. Look on other forums and you can see both of them at or below MSRP. I think two things are happening, 1 the economy sucks and 2, supply is catching up with the demand, especially with the GV. Both are becoming very common, if you want one, they are very easy to come by at less than MSRP.

I have gotten my Milgauss, SS Daytona, and Milgauss GV all within 3 months all from ADs. I don't think I could have done that in a better economy.

I've put down the Dostoevsky and re-read the entire Douglas Adams catalogue since this mess began.

I've decided that I can be miserable through this debacle, or I can wear a great watch and be try to be happy. Either way, it will turn out the same in the end.

Cheers,

Chris

Citibank yesterday said it'll cut 50,000 jobs worldwide, on top of the 23,000 it's already axed. Best to be prepared for things to get worse before they get any better.

if it's true, as stated in another thread just started, that there's a total of four ss daytonas at a tourneau in san fran selling for msrp, then i'd say there's a problem.
