Need advice on Explorer II 16570 (1998)
Hi,
I came across 1998 issue of the Explorer ii. I dont have any Rolex yet and was considering Explorer 1 214270. However, this pre-owned piece is in good condition, is sold by an AD, was serviced by them and AD gives additional 2 yrs warranty. The case has normal wear, some of the numbers on the bezel are losing paint and bracelet is missing extra links so I have to buy them or put on nato/leather. I should also mention that box and papers are included. Please share your opinion regarding buying 20yr old Rolex vs new or under 5 year old. The price is competitive, so not sure if there are any gotchas I don't know about or AD wants to get it out. This watch was at the store for at least 6 months now. If you can share price that you believe this should be at, it would help as well. I already checked eBay and chrono24 Thank you |

First welcome aboard, you’ll like it here.
Secondly, please just tell us the asking price, let us start there. The more information we have the better. Let us judge if it’s competitivd, don’t make us guess. Also, if you have photos, please post them. Unless you’re good at spotting poor polishing jobs and other dodgy attributes of course. Help us help you. A 20yo rolex can be a wonderful companion!

Photos aren’t showing sadly.
Gotta ask, Richelieu as in the Cardinal or the WW2 era French battleship?

In my opinion go with something new or something under 5 years old, that way you have peace of mind and hopefully wont have to spend money on unexpected repairs. If you think you’re not ready to buy new or slightly used, then just take your time and wait. Don’t get something just because its closer to your grasp. Wait and get the watch you want.

I was referring to the French monster named after him. One of the last battleships built and one of the finest. Anyway, back on topic. Ha!

Valid point. The price diff between explorer 2 form 1998 and explorer 1 from 2016 is about 2k which is not that big given that the watch will be almost new. Unfortunately, there is no Explorer 1 to be found in NYC ;) so waiting patiently. I never considered exp 2 due to its size but ref 16570 looks right and has the complication that I wanted. In fact, I went to that store to look at GS SBGM221

More to your point, my old gmt (now with son) is 32 years old and looks/works fine.

I grabbed a screenshot of your Dropbox file just for the discussion.
On the question, the price reflects the market price if you trust the seller’s shop to be there for you should anything go wrong over the next 2 years. I’d pick that one over an Expl. I if you value the complication on the Expl. II.

@77T not sure if I trust the shop. They are AD, so I assume everything MUST be legit. The sales guy was nice... however I expected him to know more about what he sells. I am a bit surprised at the price and the fact that I have seen this watch in that store for a few months now. I never bought a pre-owned watch before and need advice on what to look for.
I do value GMT, but also enjoy the simplicity of Explorer 1 214270. |

As for the AD, you should get everything about their warranty in writing especially if you don’t already have a trusting bond with the owner.
On the price, what surprised you about it? The only trade off I see with this particular one is tritium dial & hands. If you want a dial and hands that glow, then consider the Luminova dial that came in the A serial numbered ones starting in 1999. Sent from my iPhoneX using Tapatalk

Add $2K to your budget and buy a 216570. Less bracelet stretch, newer watch.
