I am so proud of being a SUB owner

I was just watching footage of Che Guevara in discovery civilization, where he was visiting factories and such during the cuban revolution and he was always wearing a Sub Date, I mean what is a socialist doing wearing a rolex right? I am proud because I guess he is not wearing it as a luxury item, he is wearing it because it's the most relaiable time piece he could have, right? anyways its really nice to see footage of him in his uniform bossing around with his sub on the wrist

I believe there was a pic in the fourm of Castro making plans to invade cube where he was wearing his Sub date, maybe it was before, maybe after, who knows.

I think there may be some confusion over the term "socialist" when "communist" would be more suitable.

Anyway this is a watch forum, so why not leave the political analyses and comments for a more appropriate setting?

Well said David. This IS a watch forum. This topic has been brought up before with sad results.

Rolex has a long history with people from all walks of life. I have no problem with a discussion of the history of the brand. As soon as it becomes political it's done.

Remembers me of old people telling that after invading the western parts of Europe in WW II Russian soldiers often would carry several wristwatches!

"Liberated" of course ...

If you carefully examine Che's fotos you can see that Commandante used to wear a gmt with black bezel and not a sub.

The Sub is a great watch independent of who wears them.

Exactly! How someone comes up with the money for one is irrelevent. I personally had to liberate the funds from my wife's grocery budget. I not only got the watch, but lost a bit of weight!

Why does it matter who the guy is? Jeeze...The point is he wears a Rolex.

And David, he's not a communist. True communism is unattainable.

Sub or GMT, doesn't matter - the point is he wore a Professional Line Rolex - the chosen watch of any self respecting revolutionary.

I may well agree with you, and then again I may not. Here is not the place to discuss it. All I will say is thanks to QuickSilver for some interesting pics of Che with his cigars and Rolex.

Neither of which are that unusual in the hands of a middle-class medical graduate.

The next time that a dictator/revolutionary decides that they know best - that they know how best to decide how income/wealth should be distributed the first thing that will spring to my mind is "well the guy was wearing a good watch at the time". What next - a day date with a Fuhrer bracelet ? If this comment bans me from the forum then so be it. I`ve read many posts about how people defend their property/rights/families/etc. Refer to the posts about pocket dumps and the guns/knives displayed and threats implied to robbers. If we can not defend our persons/property/liberty then what chance have we of living a decent life ?

Interesting pics David. Wondering if these have these been officially authenticated as genuine pics? In other words not manipulated in any way.

I have a young idealistic mate that idolises Che and the concept of communism (although he is from a very wealthy family) and despises Rolex watches, i'm going to email these to him. Can't wait to see what he says lol!

Also any pics of Fidel with his Rollie?

Frankly, I am ashamed that I wear the same watch as this guy. In much the same way that I am not proud to wear the same brand as Saddam Hussein.

I'm a proud owner of a Sub!! because I bust my ass off to get one...
not because this guy (Che) wears one, I wear a Rolex because I like them not
because this guy or that guy have one.

Easy Mate... have a break! The topic obviously touched a sensible chord for you and I very much doubt anybody meant to... I think folks are just trying to talk about watches and keeping it light... in that spirit, I want to share that I'm considering transforming into a piece of Gouda... I'm just feeling awful to have a pulse, eyes, a brain,... you know just like all'em murderers and evil people out there!

BTW, my next post may be entitled: I'm so proud to be a piece of Gouda!

I can't authenticate them - they are from my large collection of Rolex pics trawled from the Net (and taking up a huge portion of my hard drive). But the legend of Che owning and relying on a Rolex is authenticated. Some guy - an American I think - took possession of Che's Rolex after his death. Not sure if he still has it or if he sold it on.
