I'm curious about this, on the website many new Panerai are said to be using OP Xx series. I thought the in house movement starts with Pxxxx ?

Even though we knew it was coming, it's the end of era.

Would this also have an unintended (or perhaps intentional) consequence that indie watchmakers are squeezed out of overhauling Panerai‘s?

Any certified watchmaker knows ETA and can get parts but will Panerai allow the same access for watchmakers?

I used to be a huge Panerai fan and owner. Only one model left, the 422, and while I still track the brand I find it to be very sad that the once up and coming Panerai brand does not seem to know its way. The worst SIHH that I can remember for the brand. Not a single watch I am interested in. Snap on case backs? Really? At some point they will bring the brand back to its roots or it will be what it is. A shell of what it was and what it could be.

I've never been an owner but have always loved the brand, and I completely agree with this. The Due models should have 100m water resistance IMO. Heck, even the new Luminor models have reduced water resistance (300m to 100m), closed "6" and "9" numbers on the dial, no sandwich options, and springbars. It's a shame, but hopefully the new guy will get Panerai turned back towards its roots.

I can understand how Panerai would like to separate the entry level models with the high priced upper level models.

If the only difference between the 3-day and 8-day models are the movement, the 3-day movement ones may eat into the sales of more expensive 8-day model. They are not making all models with WR 100M and spring bars, etc. They are still keep those more desirable aesthetics on the higher priced models. They are just making you pay more for them.

Omega has Speedmaster Pro and Speedmaster Reduced (smaller case, automatic movement, snap caseback). Yet still, a lot of people enjoy owning the Speedmaster Reduced and eventually grow into owning Speedmaster Pro.

Most Panerai watches have simple design, how many times can they make watches with similar design over and over again? I like seeing Panerai making changes and making something that looks a different. I like 311 and 690 for they are a little different.

It's amazing the little snippets of info you pick up from articles like this.
For instance, I never realised the 'OP' logo incorporating the up and down arrows was a reference to Panerai's historical manufacture of both under sea & arial recording instruments.
Now I know...
Amazing

I like the idea of in-house movements but, the recent example of this move by Tudor doesn't seem to have a significant impact on their presence or the market value. One of the reasons for this move may be to discourage counterfeiting?

I am not sure if Panerai had a part in this decision.

They are finishing off any stock of the OP movements that they have. All the in-house movements as you stated start with the P. designation.

I would honestly only trust Panerai with them.
