Datejust 41 vs Datejust II
I went to 2 local ADs, neither had a true comparison but based on al the pictures ive seen online, it seems the DJII is a little bigger?! Is this true, does anyone have both or have seen both can chime in? The flutes on the new 41 DJ seems to be smaller, the whole watch seems to be daintier, regardless of what bracelet it is on. Am I off? Please help. thanks

Yeah you’re not wrong.
They’re different watches, similar, yes, but it’s a different design. The DJ2 case is bigger, thicker, with bigger markers, and a little bit of a wider bezel (I think). The DJ2 looks almost inflated in comparison. |

I read the Explorer II and DJ II share the same case. Wouldn’t surprise me, the DJ II is substantial, that’s why I like it.

I love the fluted bezel but I also like the super size of the DJII case. To me, the new 41 seems like an old the old 36mm but maybe in 38 now, stil small and meek in comparison, if the bracelet isn't a deal breaker for you either way

Very different watches indeed. The DJ41 is has a closer feel to a DJ36. I’ve always liked the proportions of the DJ2 better. Much sportier, but I realize what most didn’t like about the proportions were in fact what I liked.

I went from DJ36 to DJ41 (which measures 39.84mm across the case) but I did try a couple of DJII models side by side with the DJ41 prior to purchase. The DJ41 is not "dainty" but it is slimmer and better proportioned, in line with the DJ range. DJII was too "fat" for my liking but each to their own.
If considering the DJII, you really should try it next to a DJ41 to make sure your choice is a good one. Oh... and of course you'll be stuck with an oyster bracelet on the DJII - a real no no if you don't like looking at a scratched bracelet after a few weeks. The jubilee always remains looking pristine (I wore one daily for 15 years on my DJ36 and it always looked immaculate). |

The proportions on the DJ II are off in my opinion. The DJ 41 keeps more of the classic DJ proportions. In my mind I think of the DDII and DJII as unsuccessful attempts by Rolex to make larger versions of the classics but then they got it right with the DD40 and DJ41.

Datejust II old : 41mm diameter; 12,22mm thick; 3136 movement; 48 h power reserve
Datejust 41 (2016) : 41mm diameter; 11,70mm thick; 3235 movement, 70h power reserve Notches of the old are a bit wider. Indexes on the dial are a little bit wider too. |

^^^To me, the one on the left looks better. Some want sporty and bold, some want traditional and conservative. Both beautiful.

The DJ2 vs DJ41 debate will rage on forever. I liked the DJ2 so much that I have three in total. The term describing the DJ2 as out of proportion is non-sense. Out of proportion to what exactly? Itself or the 36? It was never supposed to be an upscaled replica of a 36 which I think many people hoped it would or should have been. The DJ2 was a new design. A sporty more youthful take on the traditional look of the classic DJ36 and I believe it achieved that very well. It has its own proportions that suit it very well. The 41 is a great watch, I like it, but I would personally still pick the DJ2 over the 41 again. Other than a DJ2 I'd go for a 36 in all likelihood. |

They are very different watches. To me the DJ2 is sportier and the DJ41 is dressier. They are both beautiful. In general I'd say most folks on TRF prefer the DJ41. I'm in the minority, but I absolutely love the DJ2. So sporty. It'd be a good time to pick one up.

I compared the two models yesterday and would say I preferred the DJ2 because the bezel is slightly larger but the difference is really very small, I was shocked just how similar they are after reading so much about the differences and ‘wrong proportions’ of the DJ2, it’s all been over exaggerated in my opinion, I imagined them being totally different watches and they simply aren’t!

Just to point out I was referring of course to the look of the watches not the movement, each one I viewed were on oyster bracelets with fluted bezels and diamond dials

Both very nice.
The jubilee is a grower imo having previously preferred the oyster. However the laster GMTs probably helped convince me re the jubilee. |

Think of the DJ2 a baggy pants, and the DJ41 is slim fit.

I’ve had my DJII for 6 years or so and still love it. I agree with others who describe it as a sportier version of a DJ.

DJ 41 is more comfortable to wear similar
to OP 39. 114300.DJ2 is more bulky and sportier but not that comfortable to wear. |

I picked the DJII, simply because of the 41mm dial. The bonus was the oyster bracelet. For me it is a nice balance. I have a couple GMTs, and the DJII gives me a dressier look as compared to my GMT when I want to wear it like that.

Yes this it, it's the sportier version , bigger watch than DJ41, great if your wrist size can handle the 41 mm. I owned both , sold the DJ41 because its only approximately 39 mm. DJ41 is classical proportions meaning it is more in the traditional dress watch category. My guess is that DJII was probably too large for some markets and was ultimately re sized.
