Anyone regret getting sub vs. sub date or vice versa?
I’ve found myself in the position of deciding between a sub and a sub date like so many others have discussed in previous posts. I’m curious about getting a more nuanced perspective on the decision compared to what I’ve seen before though.
Anyone regret making the decision to go with the sub or sub date after some time? What were your thoughts as you decided that the other option may have been better? I know that after the thrill of a new watch settles in and you get used to it you start noticing characteristics that weren’t readily apparent. For me I was always set on the sub without a date, until I tried on a sub date. That then had me thinking that the sub looked a bit plain and incomplete. I wear my pieces for myself, but a guilty part of me also wanted my watch to be more recognizable, and the cyclops certain helps with that. On the other hand the sub without the cyclops is super clean, symmetrical, and I wonder how much of a pain it will be to have to deal with part of the dial being obstructed by the cyclops. I guess it’s such a tough choice because both options are so good! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Judging from what you are telling us, it sounds like the date is the right choice for you. I too was drawn in by the "clean symmetrical dial", but it got a little plain and boring after a while. The cyclops definitely makes the watch just a little more unique and I do miss that. And again like I said, if you are used to having watches with date, you will subconsciously look down at your wrist to check the date. Go with the date, you won't regret it.

I appreciate it. You make really good points. Most of my watches have dates but today I wore one that didn’t and looked down at it like 4 times. I see you’ve got a GMT and a DJ too. Did you get used to reading the time through/around the cyclops? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Date function is a must for me! Don't regret getting a subC with a date. Very pleased with it.

This was a bit of a journey for me. When I first set out to buy a Submariner, I went for the ceramic Submariner (114060) aka the 'No-Date Sub C'. I didn't like the asymmetrical cyclops, and the 114060 lined up well with my other watches at that time. An Omega Speedmaster Professional (311.30.42.30.01.005) and a Z-Blue Milgauss (116400GV). I really enjoyed looking at those perfectly symmetrical dials
All was well until I wanted to buy a GMT Master II (116710BLNR). As you know, there is no GMT without a cyclops (unless you have it removed by a 3rd party) so I had to do a 'trust fall' and buy the first watch which had a cyclops and to my surprise, it did not distract me as much as I thought it would. I think the major reason for this is because the cyclops in modern Rolex watches is very clear and thanks to the anti-reflective coating, the cyclops is not as prominent as I thought it would be. Whenever I thought about the cyclops in the past, I thought about older Datejust or Day-Date watches with a milky lens, but modern Rolexes don't have that characteristic any more. After some months cycling through my watches, I noticed that I wore the Sub and GMT the most, but I didn't particularly care that much about the GMT function. So I decided to get another watch by consolidating some of the watches I own and got a Submariner Date (116619LB) aka 'Smurf' which comes with a cyclops. I probably would not have bought that watch as my first Rolex, but after some trial and error I arrived at that model and I am very happy with it. tl;dr: Bought a bunch of different watches, all of which had no date because I firmly believed that the date would be distracting. Ended up with Submariner Date as my favorite watch |

1 watch = date watch
More than 1 watch can go with a no date. I like cyclops.

Bought a two line 14060M, great watch, but found that I look at the date many times a day. A bit of a Dory I guess.
To remedy the lack of date, I bought a 16610, which has become my work watch. My wife thinks I am crazy If I were to do it over, I would get the date. But for now, two’s company. |

Never even considered the ND.
Always loved the date version and nothings changed. No regrets. In fact, loved it so much even treated myself to the TT version just for good measure. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk

My solution is that I have a GMT II (BLNR) and ND Sub. If I could only have one watch, it would be Sub Date.

I use the date function all the time, so only ever considered the Sub Date. The cyclops doesn't bother me but I'd be equally happy without it.

l am most of my working time in front of a screen and see always the date and calendars. So the dateless Explorer is perfect for me. I have problems with the cyclops' esthetic impact on the watch.
Just the date at 3 bothers me, prefer the 6 as date window position. |

I bought the 114060 in 2013. Zero regrets. I check the date on my phone first thing and enjoy that clean symmetrical dial all day long

I had an Omega Seamaster 300 MC-A - which is a no-date model - prior to getting my SubC Date. It was the experience of being in situations where I needed to know the date and not being able to find it out by glancing at the multi-thousand-dollar timepiece on my wrist that convinced me to go with a Date versus another no-date model. I haven't regretted it at all. Indeed, I have no doubt I would have regretted it if I had gone with a no-date.
Looks wise, I think it's a wash. I like the classic symmetry of the no-date Sub's dial layout, but I also genuinely like the look of the cyclops on the Date version, so I don't personally find it to be a tradeoff between looks and function. The bottom line is I have enjoyed my 116610LN every minute I have worn it. I can appreciate the opinions of those who prefer the no-date, but the Date is the Sub for me. |

Got a Sub date, then sold it and got a 5513 Sub, than got another Sub date (LV),
So both date or no date are all good

My AD friend told me the AD sells date Subs 20 to 1 over no date Subs.

Do you need your watch to tell the date? Do you have many watches?
If you don't need a date on your watch, and you have many watches in your rotation, it may make a bit more sense to go with a "no date" Sub. Simply because you wind it, adjust the correct time, and you're good to go. Slightly quicker to get ready than with a date. Else, honestly, there is no bad choice here. Congrats in advance! |

I have a 14060M two liner and 114060 and I love the clean and balanced look of their uncluttered dials. I have no trouble remembering the date.

I've owned both more than once. I prefer the clean look of the 114060. It's a modern 5512 to me. The date is everywhere you look. Whatever you're reading this thread on, its on that device too.

I prefer the date version and bought a 16610 last July. But changed my mind as it was so bland looking so traded it for a TT DJ41 twice the price!
If you absolutely have to have a Sub, go date if you have ever had a date watch and looked at it to check the date! |

I went 114060 with no regrets. Of my Rolex watches only one has the date (BLNR). I definitely like the cleaner look without the Cyclops and even swapped the flat top acrylic crystal on my Tudor Sub to a Super dome.

Well I had a chance to purchase the ND on Sunday - from an AD. I passed walked out to the car called a different AD and they had the Date. Once the date hit my wrist, something told me that's you. Maybe because I had a 14060 ND back in the day. I pickup the 116610 in 4 hours.

Anyone regret getting sub vs. sub date or vice versa?
I still subconsciously check my watch for date even though most of my watch doesn’t have date function lol that’s why every time I travel for work I wear my gmt, plus its good to know the time back home. Sub nd is super clean and sometime the cyclop on the Sub date can be a bit distracting. Maybe the answer is SD 16600?
