Thoughts on trading my Submariner 114060 for Polar Explorer II 16570

I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking for a while. This place is a fantastic resource for all things Rolex/Tudor. Great community you have here. Now onto my predicament...

I purchased my first Rolex, a Sub 114060, back in August. The watch is really beautiful though IMHO it brings almost too much to the table in regards to bling factor for lack of a better term. It has gotten me more attention than I had thought it would. I would not be comfortable traveling to a lot of places with the Sub. I have also, strangely, not been able to get a totally comfortable fit on my 7" wrist after A LOT of trial and error. I feel like it wears a tad large as well. My dress is typically casual at work and at home.

I have been eyeing the 16570 Polar for a good while now and I'm thinking about making a trade. The Polar prices have been on the rise recently as well. I like the idea of making the polar my one daily watch with a date, I think it will be lighter and more comfortable, and I feel like I would be more comfortable wearing it for travel.

Should I do the trade? If so, should I wait until after Basel? If anyone has any advice or experience with making such a trade, I'm all ears. Thanks!

I wouldn't give up a SubC for an ExpII based on having owned 2 over the years, both moved on. However, if you would like something lighter and smaller wearing than the SubC, its a great candidate. If you do it, and moreso in a private deal trade, you should be getting significant cash your way.

Thanks for the replies. I’ve been following the classifieds and the 16570 is up to 5.5-6k+ for a late serial polar with box and papers in excellent condition. Used SubCs look to be going for 6.5 to 7k. So the Polar is creeping up there.

I am looking for something smaller and lighter. I am admittedly not 100% yet as to whether or not I want to move on from the sub though.

Do you think it matters if I wait until after Basel or not?

In my mind, you already have the perfect watch I would be happy if that was the only watch for life

I have both the 114060 and 16570 polar and I feel the exact same way as you are toward the 114060, it is the most beautiful thing but very much a Rolex icon and for me it is blingy, while the 16570 is very understated and un-Rolex. For me the 114060 is much easier to get a good fit than the 16570, and overall the quality of 114060 feels much more "solid"

If I have to pick one out of the two, it will be the 114060. Below is a photo of both, it might make the decision making easier or it can be harder :)

Really nice picture. I’m not sure how one could think the subc is understated or not at all blingy. The watch reflects light from every angle and draws attention. It’s not solid gold and not a datejust 41 with fluted bezel but it throws light everywhere - from the ceramic bezel to the wg gold indices.

The watch is gorgeous. Maybe the flashiness of the piece is all in my head though, but I really don’t think so. My relationship with the watch is complicated, though i’m not sure that’s a bad thing.

The sub is not subtle.

Op—I️ am with you. I️ have an 16570 then bought a new gym it and it feels way more noticeable. I️ like my explorer II and have thought of trading in my gmt because of that. Get whatever is comfortable and you want though.

I flipped a BLNR(!!!!!!!!) for a black dial 16570(!!!!!!) for all the reasons you raised. And I much prefer it. This is forum heresy, but it’s about which watch you’re most comfortable wearing.

I tried the polar on, it’s a cool watch. But I ended up with the 114060. Personally I wouldn’t buy the EXP II because it’s gaining steam. I think all the 5 digits are overpriced ATM. I’d buy it because you prefer the watch.

If you want a versatile watch that wears a little smaller and won't draw attention, consider an Explorer I if you can live without a date.

I have a sub and an explorer 1. I love the explorer 1 - classic look, easy to read dial, goes well with a suit, and it doesn't draw attention.

I’d trade for a pre-ceramic sub if you want less bling... I’ve owned the 40 and 42mm Explorer II. Neither of the E2s were as versatile as a sub imo.

This is good advice.

I have 116610 and never received a single comment on it. Though, I do agree that to our WIS community, SubC is a bit more bling.

Keep the Sub or go 5 digit in my opinion.

How in the world does a 114060 bring too much attention, and have too much bling, for any wearer? Baffled at this..

Exactly—unless the OP runs around a watch enthusiast crowd or a Rolex AD convention, I don’t see it. Normally,
The vast majority of people
Don’t notice watches, much less a black Sub. The Sub really isn’t a bling watch.

They're extremely shinny because of the ceramic bezel, gloss dial and lack of AR coating. Almost like an Xmas ornament.

Right, this... also, I mean no disrespect, but how on earth can you not get a glide lock to fit???

OP, if you can't get a 114060 to fit I think your Polar will be even more difficult to fit.

The watch feels heavy to me. I like my watches snug and the sub leaves mark. One more notch open on the glidelock and it slides down my wrist

I’m thinking the lighter 16570 will help, though maybe not.

Gotcha. I still think if you can't get the glide lock to fit you're going to have issues with other options.

It is also my opinion that if you give the sub a bit more time the weight will become natural to you.

I personally wouldn't make this trade.

You should wear what makes YOU feel comfortable. Should you decide to change, sell your 114060 first, then get the last of the 15670 models with the good bracelet. I sure wouldn’t be trading !

My experience with the SubC is that it felt top heavy to me. Frankly my 116600 feels more comfortable and I never get that feeling with it. Also as far as the blinginess is concerned the large expanse of unbroken black ceramic is a great light reflector and really also is much more bright than the graduated marked bezel on the 116600. Finally, I also couldn't get past the top heavy feel of the SubC and ended up being happier with my 14060 than the 114060. It wasn't a matter of strap adjustment as much as the top heavy feel. No amount of strap adjustment could over come that for me. I still have the 14060 and my black face 16570 which is the close to the watch in question here. They are both potentially on the block as the 116600 and the 326934 I've got quite a few bases covered.
