The beginning of the end?

Not for the first time I’m hearing and reading that Rolex are looking to position themselves in the Uber luxury segment with reduced production likely to increase pricing thru demand. Currency fluctuations aside we haven’t seen a price increase for a number of years but the trend is there for all to see with preowned prices and if the reduced output strategy is only Half true I wonder if the end game may well be in sight for many more.

Of course one could assume that others will fill the void, Omega ,JLC and IWC etc etc will no doubt step up and their watches will in turn increase exponentially until they too are symbols of ultimate luxury. Of course Nomos and other entry level watches will then fill that void and become the sought after brand of tomorrow

I admit i may be being a little bit pessimistic but in an odd sort of way i’m largely done with Rolex for myself and any future buys will be gifts for my wife and daughter. In truth I’ve probably got all I could ever need or want perhaps except an PP AC and If true it won’t really affect me anyway. That said who else can see the hobby slipping away and increasingly becoming out of the reach of many.

I think at the beginning of the end we will hear of stories of significant layoffs at Rolex as a cost saving measure. I personally don't see that day coming any time soon.

Don't forget... People are buying Lamborghinis with bitcoin. I'm sure the marijuana and cryptocurrency industries will help keep the Rollies rollin' for decades to come.

I think it will isolate the brand and increase sells for other companies. I am already more interested in omegas and IWCs as of late.

Lol your talking about a hobby barely few people in the world can afford to begin with, so your point is what? The fairly rich get priced out of Rolex? So what?

Well I imagine that the watch collecting hobby is one enjoyed by many albeit slightly less so at the haute horologie / luxury end of scale but in any case if the trend goes the way it seems to be going it will I suspect push a lot of people away as even today’s entry level luxury may well step up to fill voids. There is I suspect a few kickstarters and the like that would then step up again which then opens the door for quartz and Apple at the entry level and subsequently the beginning of the end for the majority that currently enjoy the hobby yet are perhaps not exceptionally well off

Just a thought - not losing any sleep over it

Rolex is more popular and in demand than perhaps ever before. I don’t understand your point. In fact, it seems exactly opposite to me.
