So here I am now playing a decision game in regards as to what cal to buy, so....

Option one is 1999 14270 Explorer 1 with "swiss" only dial

Option 2 is a choice from 2 dated 2004 114270, Explorer

all are in lovely condition and come with papers.

I understand the 114270 has a Cal.3130 (31 jewels) so a better movement, were as the 14270 has a Cal. 3000 (27 Jewels)

This will be my second Rolex once I’ve arrived at a decision,

Any comments or thoughts as to what would be a better choice would be greatly welcome.

If it were me I'd go for the later 2004 model with the solid end links which make for a bit less rattle when you're wearing it and a cleaner looking dial without the later engraved rehaut.

Jewel count is no guarantee of quality.
Having said that the 114270 is by far the better watch out of the two choices for a good many reasons.

I am in the exact same situation, and I either want an almost BNIB 114270 or the oldest possible 14270 with tritium lume... Its hard to decide

I must admit I was sold on the 114270 even before the 14270 was put on the table, all I read says it is the better model and there's no real difference in the price.

What did you end up purchasing?

I have had both the 14270 but with Tritium dial

I have now the 114270 which is significantly better.

Mine is "M" Series from 2008, so it has engraved Rolex * Rolex inside bezel diameter. So, that is a huge change right there but you cant really see it unless you look for it. The Swiss Made is great due to the green Superluminova lume which I prefer. The SEL while they do make strap changes harder are nice to have and make the watch feel like a higher end piece.

Also, it is good to know my watch has a newer more shock resistant movement.

Easy choice: 114270, all day long. 3130 is technically superior to the 3000 Cal., and the SEL Oyster bracelet gives the watch a more substantial feel.

Be patient! Find an early 14270 w/ drilled lugs and T<25 Dial! Drilled lugs bring out the beauty in this case :) Just like the 1016

I had the 114270 and the only major advantage I see on it over a Swiss dial 14270 is the solid end links in the bracelet. However, be advised that the springbar location on the 114270 prevents to easily switch to other bracelets such as the jubilee or Everest leather bands with solid end links. 14270 does not have that limitation so probably would select the older model because of that

I find the 114270 fits great on aftermarket GasGasBones strap.

I say go for the newest one you can get. The 2008~2009 model I think are the engraved rehault. Mine is a 2008 M series and has that.

Only way I'd chose the 14270 would be with tritium and lug holes.
