Gmt 16710
Hey Guys. Been lurking for years, but recently decided to join up and get serious.
I’m thinking for my first purchase, I’m going pre-owned, either 16610 or 16710. Can’t justify paying new retail in this bubble, with so many other obligations (kids, wife, house etc..) Question - Why have the GMT 16710 retained/grown in value? It looks like I can pick up a nice 16610 for around $6.5k but the GMT 16710 watches are all $7.5+? Thanks! |

16710's have been rising for the last few years now and are not showing signs of stopping. (Unless the new Pepsi changes that demand but I don't think so)
For me, its the perfect Rolex because: The ability to swap out the oyster band to a jubilee. The ability to swap out the bezel inserts. Ideal case size in width and thickness and smaller lugs. Perfect proportions on markers/indices, hand sizes, and bezel insert numbers. AND an additional hand to boot! I will never part with mine. |

Because you get more for your money buddy. The 16710 with the GMT function and the 3 bezel options gives you more than a 16610. For me it´s a no brainer to save a bit more and go for a 16710 if you can...
I love mine a lot...

Mainly due to the correct proportions of the case in relation to the bracelet. And the ability to change inserts. Something that’s impossible with the ceramic versions.

Agree with everything so far but I noticed 16710s starting to really go up after the WG BLRO came out - When the only way to get a modern Pepsi GMT was paying 40k+ for one in white gold. Older GMTs with modern features like solid end links and no lug holes particularly spiked in value. Then there's the ones that shared the later 3186 movement with the later ceramic version.. Those are crazy money.

Thanks guys... I had no idea you could customize the bezel so easily on a 16710... Honestly, I think it just jumped to the top of my list...
I appreciate the responses everyone! |

Get the one you want (16710) cause prices only seem to go up the longer you wait. Good luck hunting!

Purchased mine back in 1997 "T Dial" for around $3,800 new. Last had it in for service in 2013 to Rolex. One of my favorites in my collection.

I have a 16710 and love it’s versatility. Had it since new for the last 14yrs and whilst others have come and gone, this has always been my mainstay.

I had a 16710 not long ago but sold it. It's a really great watch. Very much goes back to the tool legacy of Rolex before ceramic bezels put the GMT's into sort of a new level in terms of cost and made them a little less of a tool watch and a little more towards jewlery. My personal issue with it was the size. For my wrist it was smaller than I wanted, so I sold it and put the money towards an SD43. But it was a great watch and I do miss it.

[QUOTE=2th_doc;8449728]OP you said you can find a 16710 for $7500. Be careful. That seems too low. Prices for 16710 seem to be ~$9000
Woops. Are correct. Wild to think that the 15 year old variants cost more than a brand new model. |

I see people referring to the versatility of the 16710. Can someone help me understand this? I realize the ability to switch out different colored bezel inserts and different bracelets allows for a variety of different looks. I’m just struggling to understand how this makes the reference any more versatile than say, a Sub, or any other Rolex sports model. How do the different looks make it more suitable for different activities or functions? Do the different looks create a wider range of formality levels? Or, what? Sorry to be obtuse. I just honestly don’t understand the versatility aspect of the watch, which I’ve seen mentioned a couple of times in this thread alone.

Definition of versatile is: changeable; inconstant. Therefore the ability to switch inserts makes it more versatile than a Sub, or any other Rolex sports model. It is by far the favorite piece in my collection because of this “versatility.” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Really comes down to versatility (changing of bracelet between oyster/jubilee and changing inserts between the black/coke/pepsi inserts) and proportions (timeless proportions with the thinner lugs that's proven to be every bit as tank built as modern watches). The movement itself has never changed much since the 3185.....and finding nice conditioned pieces is only getting harder and harder no matter how many were made....that's just supply/demand working. So the price no matter what will continue to go up unless Rolex comes out with a magic bullet of a modern GMT that neutralizes all of these factors (not happening especially the way they've implemented inserts/bracelet interchangeability now).

recaro18 - your posts remind me that I need more bezel inserts in my life!
The 16710 is just such a great piece. Sometimes I literally just stare at mine while sitting at my desk at work. It's pathetic really |

There’s nothing better imo. Pepsi even looks good disguised as root beer.
