The right way to define GMT

I came across this video showing how he defines GMT watch. Do you all agree with him? Because according to his definition, some Omega GMT watches may not be regarded as GMT because they do not have jump hour function. Many of my GMT watches which used ETA 2893 movement that only can move the 24 hand also are also not regarded as GMT. What do you think?

6542, 1675, 16750 and 16700 didn't have the jump hour hand, either. They were absolutely GMT watches.

to me jump hour or not if it has an independent 24 hour time scale its a GMT. If its got 2 independent times on a 12 hour scale its a dual time watch.

Exactly

How it is implemented is irrelevant

IMO it's a GMT regardless if the hour hand is decoupled (jumping) or not from the 24-hr hand.

A jumping hour hand is certainly the best implementation of GMT on a four hand dial, but an independent 24h hand is also acceptable, albeit less intuitive.

Think any watch with the extra 24hr hand is a GMT watch

I think he lacks perspective on history of the GMT watch and all those watches produced by Rolex which were the first GMTs and had the 24 hour hand tied to the hour hand with only the rotatable bezel to adjust to home time. Seems like a pretty serous fault for an "expert."

I replied to his video.

Nice video! A few points to be made however. First of all Rolex made a ton of GMT watches with the GMT hand tied to the 12 hour hand between 1954 and 1999. None of these standard GMT watches would meet your requirement as a "True" GMT. It wasn't until 1988 that Rolex introduced the GMTII with it's independent GMT hand. The same movement is used on the Explorer II.

Second, I owned a 16700 which was the last of the GMTs made by Rolex. Although it didn't have the independent 24 hour hand; the bezel was used to denote home time by rotating the 24 hour dial to the correct hour and by resetting the 12 hour time to local time. It worked as well as almost anything I could ask for with the only disadvantage being the need to set time at the new location. It did have an advantage in that the date was quick set. This is a particular advantage if the watch sits in a tray and winds down. On the "true" GMT the hour must be spun to set the date. Frankly I find that more annoying than having to set the time at a new location.

Finally, I do agree that the quick set hour hand is useful like on the GMTII, the Sky Dweller, and the Tudor model. It really makes the bezel redundant unless there is a need for a third time zone. I can't imagine any situation that I would be in that the third time zone would be desirable. On the Sky Dweller, the hour is quick settable without stopping the second hand and the date is also quick settable. It doesn't have the third time zone capability however but for me, that combined with an annual calendar is the best solution.

Thanks for the write-up on a great bargain for a GMT watch.
