1675 inserts - oldFF, FF, SFF....

There is much confusion about those 1675 redback inserts out there.

Maybe we can clear up with this thread ??

What do you think:

- chronological order was OldFatFont (OFF), SuperFatFont (SFF), FatFont (FF) ??
- who knows the time period of OFF, SFF and FF ?
- when came those black SFF and FF ??

Hope, we can clear up a little bit.....

Small, wide triangle insert first. Often with a slightly rounded triangle. Usually faded to light blue and orange eventhough there are examples where the color have stayed very blue and red. Then small triangle fuchsia which we see around 1968 with the matte mk1 long E dial. During the early 70’s we have what most people believe to be the earliest with the fat and super fat font inserts. Thickness of the font is basically the condition of the printing pad. Much easier to distinguish the era from looking at the font and style and color of the insert.

First version seen on almost all gilt GMTs originally:

Same type of insert but less faded which stayed more as a pepsi:

Second version with similar font but with fuchsia colors to begin with. Catalogue clearly shows it started like this:

And after this just the different normal fat fonts in various versions. I'm the wrong person to say after the 60's ended.

Good point with this small triangle !!!

Here we have a black one, SFF + small triangle, slightly rounded.

This would mean that black inserts came very early ???

Would also mean, that SFF´s could be very early ???

Interesting black insert. Never seen that version before.

As far as I know they were introduced in the early 70’s. My guess is that yours is early.

I didn't think a 1675 was ever offered with a Black insert!

Do share when you think they were introduced. Numerous disussions on VRF mention the early 70’s around 1972. I have no idea as I am not very interested in matte dial watches but I can say as much as they were available 1978 as I once bought an almost NOS 5m GMT that came with jubilee and black insert from the first owner.

I find the font on rolstaffs insert interesting. I have never seen something like that before.

Interesting thread. Is it theorized that the font thicknesses may be due to wearing out of the pads (and not necessarily fat to thin in chronological order), like we’ve seen argued in the sub inserts?

I find the font on rolstaffs insert interesting. I have never seen something like that before.
The earliest literature that I have seen regarding black inserts was around 1976 or 1977. I was in a Rolex catalog.

As far as an interesting insert on Rolstaffs watch, yes it is interesting not unlike many interesting inserts found on many GMTs. You're also well aware that many of the inserts are not original on these vintage GMTs anymore.

This black faded insert is known since many years. I got it from a friend, who is an GMT expert and have no doubts about it´s authenticity.
We know, that we always find exceptions regarding vintage Rolex, so I would like to get some precepts about those inserts.

Can we say:

- inserts with small triangle, slightly rounded were the first generation, beginning in the 60´s ?
- SFF inserts came up in the beginning of the 70´s ??

What about the later FF inserts. ? When did they come ?
