Polishing your 18K gold watch...
Sorry, I tried to find a generic forum to post this in, but apparently our general discussion isn't for watch related chat.. So being that I have a new 18K Rolex, and many of you likely also have one, or a TT.. I though maybe I'd get your thoughts on this product that I've used in the past for taking small micro scratches off other gold jewelry, but never a watch (yet).. it's not meant to remove deeper scratches or substitute for a proper refinish.. The yellow is a bit more abrasive but still more or less leaves a mirror finish, and the blue even more so... Anyone have experience with these or recommend something even better to get rid of those OCD induced micro scratches?
http://www.sunshinepolishingcloth.com I know, I know.. enjoy the wear and tare and let the watch get an individual identity, etc... but frankly, at least right now, I enjoy the mirror finish too much to watch it slowly turn into a swirly mess... much like when you buy a new car and that paint is swirl free, mirror like etc.. PS.. I would of course give the watch a bath under tap water and use soap, towel dry before doing this.... As with waxing a car, you cannot rub a mirror finish until it's completely clean, I get that. Would love to engage in a discussion and learn something from you more experienced gold watch owners. |

Absolutely not! I have a yellow gold Sub same as yours. And I can tell you chasing after scratches and swirls is heading down a slippery slope that will become an obsession and you will eventually ruin the watch. Keep it clean, wear the bracelet snug and don't let the PCL scratches drive you crazy. Save the refinishing only for service time. It is a gold watch and will mark up easily, that is just the nature of the beast. Cheers!

Thanks for the input fellas... Yep, I certainly don't want to rub off ½ oz of gold over the next few months chasing scratches... Just figured once a month give the polished parts a rub down with it.. anyway, good info.

I too like my watches to shine, yet I’m not OCD and fully understand that a watch can only be polished so much. So while hairline scratches don’t bother me, collections of them get cleaned up about 3 times per year with a super light hand polish of the PCLs only. I’ve been doing this for 15 years in lieu of a machine polish @ service. I’d venture that all of my hand polishes combined are equal to a single machine polish spread out over the years. For me, it’s the best of both worlds. Of course, all of my edges are crisp because I don’t mess with them.

I’m waiting for RSC at service time. Regular scratches don’t really bother me on a Rolex. You should try a President bracelet. My DD2 has virtually zero scratches after 4 years.
