For sale is this super clean, all-original, one-family Rolex Submariner Date 16800. The 8.0 million serial number dates this watch to 1983. This is a transitional model featuring vintage details like matte dial, creamy painted tritium indices and hands, open 6/9 date wheel- all underneath a sapphire crystal. Also, featured in this transitional model is the increased depth rating and higher beat movement.

Now, for a bit of background on this particular piece…this watch belongs to a dear friend of mine, by no means a watch enthusiast, whose father purchased it brand new in the early eighties. His father passed the watch down to him over twenty years ago and it has since lived in a safe, never worn by my friend, which accounts for the fantastic condition. While there is a slight sentimental attachment, the taxman came calling this year and I’m sure we all know how that goes. If it were two years older, my birth year, believe me you would not be seeing this post!

This sub is in fantastic shape given its age, as you see in the photos. Bezel and crystal are in phenomenal condition. The case and lugs are strong and sharp some everyday wear showing on the 3 o’clock case side. Bracelet/end links are 100% original with 11 links accounted with minimal stretch. “5/93” is engraved on the inside of the clasp which I imagine to be a service date record. Winding and time/date setting action is perfect. Timekeeping is spot-on.
