I wonder....

I'm the last of my family (60 yrs young) except for an older sister and she doesnt care for watches which means no one to pass them down to....so I wonder often what will become of my 5 Rolex's....Date, 2 Datejust, 2 subs( bluesy and Hulk).....and what will happen to your Rolex watches when you go?

I think a year or 2 ago I posted a similar question and people think it was too morbid and the moderators closed my thread. However, I do think this is a legitimate issue we Rolex owners need to think about.

I have 2 kids, each gets one and my younger brother gets 1 too.

I think it's a reasonable question. I'm sure we all think about it .

If really a concern start thinking about it now. Maybe some type of donation etc. At worst have them sold and proceeds go to charity.

Like any asset you want to disposition, you include it in your will. If you have no direct heirs you may have nephews, nieces, or you could pledge them to your Alma mater. You could leave them to charity. Last thing you want to do is what my father did with his 1976-ish Explorer. He 'sold' it to someone who took terrible advantage of him. I never found out who that was. But he didn't want to leave things for us kids to do, so he thought he was doing us a favor. Don't die without your desires documented in your will.

You could create a trust and include the watches in the trust along with other assets and let the trustee disposition them according to your wishes.

If you have a will, put your wishes in it. If you don't, the state will decide for you (a gift to the governor)

I only have one daughter, so I will leave them to her and have her do as she wishes with them. Hopefully, she will keep one or two and have a son she can pass them down to.

Had the same dilemma. Used to have about a dozen in my collection and I only got 2 sons. So I flipped most of them and ended up with 2 Rolex and an Omega. Rolex go to my sons and Omega to my wife (though she has her own small collections too which will goto future daughter in laws)

I remember JJ (a forum legend) went through this and he decided to sell all his watches except 1 (a SS Yacht Master) before he passed so his wife would have the money instead of a pile of watches that she wouldn’t know how to value & sell correctly.

Either you find someone who will be happy to take care of your watches afterwards or you monetise them and give the proceeds to a charity. As simple as that I guess.

Very sound advice. Be sure to include your wishes for the watches in your will or estate plan.

Depending on the financial situation, i would either include them in the will or sell them all.

Legit topic imo. One each to the children. One to wife. The rest probably sold prior if opportunity presents.

Definitely a legitimate topic. It’s a shame that Americans (and other cultures) view death as such a taboo and morbid topic. Discussing death openly and planning before death would prevent a lot of turmoil and heartache after the loss of a loved one.

its too early in the morning for something this heavy.

I actually do have mine individually listed in my will for who gets what.

I guy I use to work with was always ragging me about the buying and selling that I do to support my collecting, one day he had an audience and went into his usual make fun of me lines of why I happened to be like it etc ..... once he had exhausted his lines I calmly looked at him and said, You see this watch,(Pointing to my wrist) on his death bed..... my Father sold it to me!" I walked away to a round of applause....

I don't know how this dance will end but if it is a slow fade not a sudden thing I will liquidate out and only have one or two watches. The rest will be turned into cash and distributed to my children. No need for them to get caught up in selling.

Difficult one to call for myself & food for thought as when your younger your going to live forever & then one day you start thinking I'm getting on a bit . I'm not sure what I will do with my collection or would like to be done with them as I've never given it a thought until now . My wife has her own small collection so wouldn't want one of mine,( I just asked her ) & I have two daughters & neither care for watches , four grandchildren two girls two boys who are too young yet to show an interest or understand monetary or sentimental value . I could easily leave a watch to each ,to do as they will with it . Or I could just sell all the watches & split the proceeds between them, or maybe sell them all before the watch bubble bursts & enjoy a nice cruise/holiday.

I need to sort this out for mine. Ultimately I would like them to go to my son and any future siblings he may have (assuming I don't snuff it tomorrow) but if he grows up not interested in watches then they might as well be sold so he can enjoy the value how he chooses. It would be a great shame given the sentimental value attached to them but I won't be around so I can't get too strict.

I don't have children and even if I did there is no guarantee they would give a fig about my passion. If I go before my wife it is her problem and she will know the values. I also like the idea of passing it on to someone who will appreciate it. However, the whole charity idea is kind of nice too. A local Habitat for Humanity was given a Rolls Royce and MG recently which they will be auctioning off.

I often wonder if I will have the need for a collection as I get older or if I might have sold down to a one watch collection. At that point it becomes a minor issue but at that point I will have inherited a few more so who knows.

Good advice here. A thoughtful, well written will is the way to go.
