Explorer for my birthday! - Part 1

My wife is visiting Australia's Gold Coast, and just picked up an Explorer 214270 I sourced from Langfords for my upcoming birthday. Shane and Kathryn went out of their way to help me on the front end, and Kathryn made my wife feel like a million bucks during the final transaction. We both give Langfords a 10 out of 10!

For those interested in the numbers, here's what we're looking at for total cost converted to USD (rounded up to the next dollar). Yesterday's exchange rate was approximately $0.75 USD to $1.00 AUD, and our card does not charge conversion fees.

Explorer 214270: $8,250 AUD = $6,187 USD
Extra Link: $ 80 AUD = $ 60 USD
Total Spent: $8,330 AUD = $6,247 USD

She will be declaring the Explorer at US Customs on her return. Our worst-case estimate is $233 for duty. The calculation is:

$6,247 purchase amount
$ 800 subtract individual allowance
-------
$5,447 taxable amount
$2,000 3% of the first two grand = $60
-------
$3,447 5% of the balance = $173

That will bring our total to $6,480, which is just a hair under the $6,550 retail price in the States, but that cost includes an extra link. We'll also get approximately $624 back for Australian GST refund, bringing our total down to $5,856 for a brand new watch bought from an AD. Not too shabby, given she was going to be there anyway!

Part 2 of this story will continue on my birthday next month (yes, I'm waiting).

Here are the teaser pics my wife sent from the parking lot.

A beauty, love mine. FYI I'm amazed how loose the various FX conversions end up in terms of real cost in our own home countries. The same Explorer 214270 is MSRP CAD $7500 in Montreal, which at recent buy factors against the USD of approx 1.32, makes the same watch cost US $5685. Quite a difference.

Congratulations! I had almost the same story. Same watch, bought in Amsterdam, about a week after my birthday. (That last part is just a coincidence, though.)

Enjoy.

That is awesome. It's funny... when someone thinks enough of you to shop for a nice gift, it makes the gift so much more meaningful than if you purchased it yourself.
