Which one

I started an earlier thread asking for advice on which inexpensive automatic watch to start my 14 year old son on. I got lots of great advice and suggestions and I have now narrowed it down to a Seiko, probably 007.

Now for the questions,

1. They are not available anymore, so where would you suggest i buy. I am looking at pre owned, so I am thinking ebay?

2. Should I be looking out for anything in particular, good or bad?

3. It seems that it uses an older movement, am i better with a different model with a newer movement?

Thanks in advance.

I bought mine on Amazon about a year ago.

A skx has the 7s26 movement, which I have read is an absolute workhorse.

I recently bought a Seiko srpa21.

I bought this one because I think I will enjoy 4r36 movement that powers it because it allows “hacking” and manual winding.

Seems like a few of the guys on here speak well of the Seiko Turtle as they do of the Skx.

Just my 2 cents.

Now that I think of it OP, a Seiko Turtle might look big on your sons wrist.

Why don’t you consider one of the new Seiko Mini Turtles?

Or maybe a skx013.

He is not as keen on the shape of the turtle. He really likes the skx shape. I think the size should be ok. He is big for his age, 5ft 11 and plays as a forward (number 8) in rugby. I have heard that the 007 wears smaller than its size would suggest due to the shorter lug to lug distance. I also liked the idea of modding the watch a little over time to change the appearance a little. This could also include a new movement to one that hacks and has manual wind.

Jomashop sells skx007 for $179. I bought mine from them.

So, he decided on the skx 007/009. I spent some time looking online for prices and on ebay looking at what pre owned ones were going for.

We were in John Lewis department store, Edinburgh picking up a few bits and pieces and I thought I'd have a look in the watch cabinets. They had a nice Samurai and a few other models, then I looked at the bottom of the cabinet to see a lovely Spra21. I called my son over who tried it on and instantly fell in love with it. The shape, which he wasn't so keen on in pictures looked great on his wrist. It was also super comfy.
Then I looked at the price tag and saw that it was reduced from £430 to £215. Needless to say that my son is a very happy owner of his first mechanical watch. Seeing his face reminds me of how I felt when I got my Explorer. This might be the start of a long, and expensive hobby.

Pictures to follow.
