Buying from TRF vs AD

New to forum and looking to buy a 114060 and since they are reportedly impossible to find at an AD, I am considering one from a trusted seller here. There is one listed here that is about 3 months old. What is the downside to buying this one vs waiting to get one from an AD?

buy the seller. Just because they are a pledge member doesnt make them trusted.

That shouldn't be that hard to get at an AD though.

They aren’t impossible to find. As with most SS pro models they are out there you just have to get creative.

If this is a one-off purchase, a reputable trusted seller is a good option. If you're planning to build a collection, as said earlier these are not too difficult to locate at an AD and may be a way to start a long-term relationship with one.

Good luck and welcome to TRF!

Tulsa, OK is not Manhattan or San Francisco. Also, there is less demand for the 114610 than the 116610. From Rolex.com it looks like you have 2 local ADs. Go in to both and talk with them. I wouldn't be shocked if they had one, and I would bet they could get one for you within weeks.

+1 you should buy via AD for this one. Not that hard to find and you’ll be happy you have the contact down the road.

Not all sellers here are "trusted". Some are just profiteers looking to flip a new watch they bought for a few thousand profit. Make sure you deal with one of the big power sellers who have years of flawless transactions. JustRolexes, DavidSW, Takuya, OCRolexguy are a few of them.

As others have stated, Check out your local AD and get an idea from them on time frame. If you get the run around from them, then you have your answer.

In today's climate on that particular watch, I'd chose the AD. You gotta put the leg work in nowadays. I suspect in or "near" Tulsa there is one sitting around.

This is what I did ^ Price difference was worth it enough for me to go with DavidSW.

Assuming I would have to pay retail for it at the AD (but would I?), I would also have to pay about $640 in tax. And yes, I was looking at a watch offered by one of the TRF "trusted" sellers.

Now, if the AD does have one, do they generally sell at retail, or will they come off the price, given that it is the less popular model? If they would discount it, then I could probably do that and just pay the tax.

Agree. Wait and buy from an AD, especially in this market.. Besides immediacy, there's no upside to buying a currently produced watch from a gray dealer. I have no problem waiting and I prefer to buy from an AD under pretty much any circumstance.

I'm not very good at waiting.. So personally, I would choose the TS route. But if waiting is not a problem and you would rather have your name on the card, AD is the way. The 114060 is not an impossible watch to find. I do doubt you'll get a discount from the AD, given the current climate, though.

(Unrelated to the topic, but the quote in your signature is a fake; it's often accompanied by a particularly poorly written line about "a gentleman's choice of timepiece". Just a heads-up from a big Ian Fleming fan.)

The main difference is not having your name on the warranty card. For some people that makes no difference, but for others they really want it to be "theirs".

yep. For me its an even bigger deal with Pateks but its still important with Rolex too. Some people dont get the need to have their name on it, but for me im not spending that kind of money to buy Joe Smith's watch.

Agree with others- buy at an AD on this one, worth the short wait (if any). It’s not impossible to get. And you will probably pay retail and tax. FWIW, one of the above mentioned TS has an unworn 114060 listed for above retail so even w tax you are looking at about the same price AD vs TS.

ZERO DOWNSIDE. Just buy from a trusted seller as being ripped off is the only downside available and if you buy from a TS, then it's NOT available aka zero downside ;)

It is still a valid comment. TRF does not sell watches, or advertise watches for sale; nobody is actually buying a watch from TRF, as the OP title asks. Any purchase is directly with a member/seller.

It is an important distinction.

Exactly!

and to add, if you have concerns with any seller you should ask them directly.

Thanks for all responses thus far. When I posted "buying from TRF", I did mean from a trusted seller on TRF, just to clear that up.
I have been on the fence over 114060 vs 14060 ( I know it's been discussed ad nauseum ), but later versions of the 14060 and new 114060 are virtually the same price it seems, and with a skinny wrist, it's a difficult decision.
But, you guys are helping with the decision, so, thanks.

Ok, so I've spent the last couple of days looking at possibly every cotton-pickin' 14060 on the internet. Some things I've found (probably the same things everyone else has...):

- I can't really trust the pictures (I know...trust the seller)
- A 14060 in the condition that I would accept is virtually the same price as a new one, which my local AD has
- Without documentation otherwise, the 14060 will need service soon probably, which, at RSC, adds another $700 minimum?
- Heart says 14060, but my analytical side, which I can't ignore, says new 114060 with 5 yr. warranty, my name on the paperwork, sized for my skinny wrist by the AD.
- If I just can't shake the vintage thing, I guess I could sell it, and get a 14060.

This sort of reminds me of when I bought my last two cars. Heart wanted vintage, head said get new with warranty and reliability. So I have a Honda, which is basically an appliance with no redeeming aesthetic, unlike my old Volvo 122 of yesteryear.
