mass market i absolutely agree. Thats the genius of Rolex. It is the biggest aspirational brand for anyone who just wants a "nice watch". Its not a bad thing and there are many, many brands above their level but they have that market cornered.

Not everyone wants Rolex. They are certainly other watch brands and most do a pretty good job. Rolex only holds its vue pretty well, that is all.

PP and AP are equally hot but they are playing in different leagues. You can buy a Submariner for $7500 and it’s a no-compromise watch. AP and PP don’t compete at that price point, but at the price point they compete at they are extremely hot.

Brands are purely subjective things.
Ferrari is arguably the world's greatest brand but neither the brand nor the cars have any emotional impact on me at all. Same goes for Pagani. And Patek too. I can acknowledge their greatness but they mean nothing to me.
On the other hand some other brands have a real emotional grab on me. Porsche, Rolex, Adidas, HP, MUFC.

While I agree that Rolex is hot right now, I don't agree that other brands don't come close. Steel Patek is just as crazy if not more right now. I feel like every steel Patek reference is Daytona level difficulty to acquire.

Was at a local AD getting links placed on a sub that I plan on giving to my son for graduation from a masters program. The AD told me that Rolex told him that the world wide demand for Rolex was greater than Rolex had anticipated. He said he has 150 watches on back order and he can't even get a sub. He was not happy as he is getting calls everyday for subs/graduation gifts. His collection of watches was not bad but no subs except the TT's, no SS divers. So your statement holds water.

The only watch apple ever made to compete in the luxury space was the 18K gold version. It got discontinued in like a month.

You are confusing luxury and non luxury. There are more Ford Fiesta cars sold than Range Rovers too. Is the Fiesta a stronger brand?

You can buy a over priced gold Apple Watch (I would not) and I don’t own an Apple Watch. The sales numbers don’t lie even back in 2016 Rolex did 4.5 billion in sales Apple did 6 billion in Apple Watches alone. Again Rolex kick rocks

I agree! Rolex is just in the sweet spot; not too much like AP or PP, but exactly what one needs as a luxury watch brand with enough pedigree AND one of the most durable watches out there.
Perfection always blinks whenever it looks at a Rolex.
History tells it that way: not because a watch is highly priced means it’s better than Rolex. The AP RO was the first steel watch in the early 70s to be considered as a luxury SS watch; to accomplish that, they just raised the price as much as 10 times the price of a Submariner. They wanted to make a statement that the SS watch deserves to be hot and they were right. Same goes today with the regular Submariner as much as a PP... almost 10 times as much, but this time, both are luxury SS watches and both are hot.
What can I say, I’m a Rolex kinda guy. I’m sure you’ll understand.

no you cant. It got discontinued. That was my point. They tried luxury and they failed. A $300 dollar watch isnt luxury. Apple or otherwise.

Especially so when you spend 1/2 as much on your watch as you do on your phone. It is being positioned as "less than" a phone.

You are talking completely out of context. That is like saying Honda is the number one car brand on the planet because they sell more Civics...That's true but no one is paying over list for a Civic except the Type R...but Porsche, that's another story.

Yes, Apple sells more watches, but Apple watches don't compete with Rolex or Patek or even Tag...they compete with no one really in this segment. Just like Honda doesn't compete with Porsche or Ferrari.
How many times has the same apple watch been upgraded so far since release. How many times has the Submariner been updated. Not to mention the Apple watch really only works with an iPhone. That alone makes it obsolete on arrival for me.

So I called an Apple Store you are correct they don’t make gold Apple watches as a standard production watch. The manager said Apple would make one (special order) for an ungodly amount of money. Who knows who cares? I don’t want one. I am talking strictly sales and money spent on watches by the public.

You are taking the Op's post completely out of context. Go read it again. Compare the desirability of any Rolex to any Apple watch. Set up a table at a mall and ask normal everyday people which watch would they chose right now:
A Rolex Sub, X2, Daytona, Milguass, DJ
or
AN Apple watch.
How many people will walk off with the Apple watch.

Now do the same test with the new BLRO, Daytona C, D-Blue, BLNR or CHNR
or
Any of the other brands among wis people....
Rolex will likely beat every other brand choice for choice, with watches like the 5711 based on similar ludicrous demand wining out more often than not.
That is what I understand the OP to mean.

If you just want to make an added point to the OP that Apple sells more watches than any other brand, yes, you are right. McDonalds also sells more happy meals than all the best restaurants combined, and Hanes sells more t-shirts......and so on and so on..
One is an expendable trinket, the others are quality timeless assets.
