This was my dad's GMT that he bought in 1967.

I was about to adjust the time and the crown came of the "axle"? Just the crown.

My local jeweler recommended I send it to his authorized Rolex guy for a crown replacement. He also said to have it serviced to guarantee that is remains water proof.

Does anyone know if the crown can be reattached or if a new one is required? And if new is required, should I try and find old new stock? I'm pretty sure this watch is all original.

Any advice would be appreciated. I live in Los Angeles.

If you wear it, keep the original, get a new crown and gaskets and pressure test it

Get it serviced. I’m pretty sure it sorely needs one after all this year. Do not, I repeat, do not bring it to Rolex. Find a reputable Rolex certified watch maker around your area. Looking to spend between $400 to $600 from independents. You usually also get to keep all original parts. Depending on how original and the condition of your watch, that’s a worthy investment.

If I lived in LA, I’d take it to LA Watch Works. A vintage GMT deserves a proper service from the right shop.

The crown screws onto the stem.

Sounds like it came unscrewed and is a 15 minute fix by any competent watchmaker.

Caseback comes off, stem is extracted, crown screwed and loctited back on, re-inserted, and the caseback screwed back on.

The detente screw has come loose, its the screw next to the tiny green arrow. Easy fix unless the screw has actually backed all the way out. As some have mentioned, might be time for a service anyway.

Ah, the crown backed off the stem! still easy. :)

My crown came off my Tudor Sub last year after I spent a ton on an overhaul. I watched him fix it and it took 10 mins with some locktite. No big deal!

Wow, a family treasure. I have my grandfather and great grandfathers pocket watches. You are fortunate to have such a treasure. I would advise you to buy insurance as your watch could be worth $25,000. or more based on the asking peices I have seen.
