Where to remove a link
Sorry for this stupid question, but can every jeweler remove a link of my Rolex watch? It seems a bit to big and i'd like to remove one link. Is it best to go to a ROLEX AD or is every jewelrystore oke?

I bought mines from a TS here and brought it to a local AD to remove a couple links. Afterwards I asked the sales guy, how much I owe you and he said nothing.
They'll do it free of charge to possibly garner future business. I did try on a few watches. |

If you can undo a screw DIY its very easy to do you might have to apply a bit of heat to the link with a hairdryer to loosen the screw but it is a very simple task to do.

Any watchmaker can take a link out for you. Some AD's let the sales staff do the job and they can be a bit ham-fisted with it.

You will learn letting other people do that will at some point be a problem as in scratching or marring your watch or screws. Do yourself a favor read up on it get the proper tools and do it yourself you will find that it is fun and a great part of the hobby for me anyway.

When I bought my first Rolex, an Exp 39mm at an AD, it was necessary to remove a link and thinking that he would be an expert at the job allowed him to do so.
On returning home I noticed he had scratched with the screwdriver both areas around the screw head. For my next Rolex, a SubC with date, before purchase I asked the AD to order me a Rolex Screwdriver Ref. No. 2100. Which he did, at a cost of about £22.00. He mentioned that he had never had this request before. This is the tool for the job. It is quite small therefore less chance of stripping a thread. Part of the blade which engages with the screw head slot is machined perfectly parallel with no taper which gives it less chance to rise out of the slot to scratch polished surfaces. As a back-up, apply to the screwhole a small drop of Loctite No. 222. Job done! It’s worth doing yourself! PS I was able to remove the scratches with Autosol cream. Phew! |

Invest in a 1.7mm hollow ground screwdriver and some loctite.
