That was weird...

I just received a courier parcel 30 seconds ago... as I signed for it the Courier said "How much was that watch?"....

WTF was I going to say....? Figured I would just mention MSRP so I held up 8 fingers... he said... "80,000?"

I said are you interested in watches.. he said, "I can just tell it looks expensive!"

First tme in 3 months someone has commented on it...

Given a second to think, I may (should?) have answered differently, just that I was caught slightly off-guard.

What should have been the correct, polite, diplomatic way to say "I'd rather not say?"

He didn't ask "what kind" or "is it real" etc etc, just straight to the chase "How much"!!!

Now I worry that he and his mates will be waiting outside when I go home tonight

EDIT: CLARIFICATION
Watch was on my wrist, parcel was unrelated, just some papers...

You should have said, "it was a gift, I didn't ask the person who gave it to me."

THAT'S IT...

This seems to be the easy way to answer politely without giving anything away... I could even add "for all I know, it's probably a fake!, ha ha

I am pretty sure the watch was on his wrist and he was signing for a different package when the delivery guy saw it.

It's the one on his wrist guys. Next time tell them your better half got it at the flea-market, that should shut him up.

I think it's the watch he was wearing at the time of signing the parcel, not what's in there?

When people ask how much is your watch and you don't know the person the best think to do is not to answer or tell him is a fake

Why they need to know, is not their business to know, if you want to know go and check the internet or any AD, it's just my opinion

Yes, it would.

I would trade a watch for X-ray vision.

Excellent. I`m impressed. Just now I`m wearing my ss GMT/c and it has a z serial too. What a coincidence two z serial numbers at the opposite ends of the earth. Scratches and dings are part of everyday watch life. (Unfortunately).

wis is "watch idiot savant"

when somebody tells me their gen is fake i press them on the issue and make them admit it is real because they just purposely lied to me. i had a sales man after a meeting was over the other day that was wearing an older coke gmt with the insert faded, i was wearing my gmt2c. while everybody was still in the room after the meeting was over i commented on it. he had been lying to all of us about his 300,000.00 product throughout the entire meeting and everybody was a little aggravated about it so to change the subject i mentioned his watch he immediately lied and said it was a fake. i was giving him a chance to get a little common ground with us as their were two other people in the room wearing black subs. i told him why i knew his watch was real and complimented him on it as did the other rolex owners.

after he left all of us were even more aggravated with him for even lying about his watch. he left with zero creditability.

With a Porsche in the driveway, he was probably looking for bling anyway.

I find it odd/impolite when people ask "how much"? Not a question that I would ask about any product (unless actually wanting to buy it), and in any case it's easy enough to find out on the World Wide Wait ...

Cheers

Yes I agree it seems pretty lowbrow to go around asking folks the costs of their possessions. I know people who do it all the time without thinking and I cringe a bit each time I witness it.

The Porsche owners I know typically shy from Bling.
Is it different in Canada?

In some places in the world it is quite the norm, for people to ask "how much" straight out with no hesitations. Saying it's a gift is a easy one as a reply to a complete stranger.

Unless its someone you trust I would tell them it was a fake and it cost $30 off ebay or something like that.

Understood your post once I got half way through it, before that, I'm thinking he's rifling through the parcel like the others. One other question though, what watch were you wearing? The GMT-IIC you note in your /s/? Is it 18kt?

I went to eat with my GFs family the other day, and we were sitting there for about 5 mins and her cousin asks me... "How much was that watch?"... and I pulled my arm out of sight and said "Why?" and she stated she wanted to buy one for her BF...

I simply shrugged it off cause she is 19 and works part time. I presumed she did not know the cost of the watch.

Very uncomfortable situation.
