Grandfather’s watch. Help needed.

Good evening all. So my mom gave me a couple of things that belonged to my grandfather today. One was a ring that was gifted to him by his 5 daughters (mom and my 4 aunts) on the occasion of his 45th wedding anniversary. I was very surprised it fit. My grandfather was a husky cuban farmer with huge hands. I was 15 when he passed but I still vividly and fondly remember how big and strong his hands were.

I was also gifted one of his watches. I know nothing about it as far as movement or anything else. I’ve tried searching ebay etc to find a similar one but to no avail. It’s probably not worth much financially but it is a priceless connection to my grandfather, whose initials are still engraved on the caseback. I would absolutely love to restore/preserve it and get it running again so I can add it to my rotation.

I would also love to try to source the original band but again, I know nothing about it and am not even sure what it looked like. I would greatly appreciate you all’s help/guidance.

I can't offer any help on the watch but really cool too get those things. Funny that one of the things I remember about my grandfather was his hands - strong and rough. He was an awesome grandfather.

While I can’t help you with your questions Hiram, I have to say that you have an absolutely priceless heirloom. I’d have it mechanically restored and wear it on special occasions.
You have to know that he is smiling down on you.

Thank you Tim. That is the plan. I would also love to be able to replace the missing anchor piece. I’m hoping some of the resident watchmakers chime in.

Great watch! If it were me I would find a good restoration guy to get it running again. Otherwise, I would be careful to preserve character of watch. Cool ring too. Enjoy both!

Worth contacting Rado and asking them either if they still have them or can put you in contact with a vintage repairer?

Of no help here but just wanted to chime in to say fantastic story and hope you get it running. I inherited just a few of my late grandfathers items and they hold such a special place in my heart. I’m sure you will cherish this forever.

nice watch dj!

send it to the local Swatch Group service depot for a full restoration. it'll take a few months but it'll be completely redone.

This is my take on it which I know is different from the mainstream but:

You have two great items there to remind you of someone you cared about, so with the watch I would send it in to be completely restored and refurbished, like the day your grandfather bought it. I would have NO interest is leaving the scratches and dings on it as if it were some sort of tribute to him.

Anymore than leaving this car as a reminder of someone, would I want their somewhat deteriorated watch to be left in less than pristine condition.

Congrats on the items.

Grandfather’s watch. Help needed.

Thank you all for the kind words. As an update I reached out to Rado via their website and am waiting for their response. It turns out their service center is 5-10 mins from my mom’s place.

I would love to service the movement, locate the missing anchor piece and find the original strap/band/bracelet. I want to keep it as original as possible. The sentimental side of me wants to look at the same dial abuelo (grandfather in spanish) would have seen.

I’ll keep everyone posted. In the meantime, if any of the resident watchmakers can chime in, I would be very grateful.

I know from past forum posts this would be a job for Bob Ridley but not sure if he is still in business.
