A comparison; Sub Date v GMT-II 16610 v 16710
Having owned my GMT for 6 months now and my Sub Date for 2 years I have noticed a number of areas where these watches are subtly different that I have not seen written down before.
Whilst I was lusting after my 16710 I was sure it would be my favourite but I actually prefer the 16610 for the most part, bar a couple of details on the 16710 which I favour. The first comparison is the case and size. The dimensions are identical for the two watches except that the case back is deeper on the Sub and the crown is much larger. This is to withstand greater depths than the GMT. This makes the Sub wear like a significantly larger watch than the GMT. I feel when wearing the GMT that it is actually quite small. The difference in size on the wrist just from the case back means a full pin hole tighter on the adjustable clasp for the watch. The 16610 is one looser. The second key size difference is the crown. The crown on the 16710 GMT is tiny - actually quite difficult to use once you are used to the Sub's over-sized crown. The Sub wears as significantly larger, heavier watch, with noticeably more wrist-presence than the GMT-II. I prefer the Sub in this section. The bracelet: Hands down no competition whatsoever here, the GMT-II has the better bracelet. The only differences are around the lack of diver-extension that the Sub has. Honestly who has ever used that to put the watch on OVER a 9mm wetsuit? Guessing a handful of people only. What the extra bulk and mechanism means is that the Sub bracelet is much larger and sharper than the GMT-II at the bottom of the wrist. At night this is sometimes a problem; my wife prefers I take my sub off at night but doesn't mind the GMT-II. Differences too in the bracelet in that the sides of the links are polished on the GMT and brushed on the Sub. Apart from the obvious differences in the hands and function they're very similar in all other respects. Conclusion; I need to buy a BLNR and brush the PCLs. Then delete this forum! Crown guards are smaller on the Sub to make room for the bigger Triplock crown. Crystal is also thicker and cyclops magnification slightly stronger. Coin-edge grooves on the bezel are cut deeper on the GMT.. Think that's about it. Similar yet so different.
