SD43 movement issue
Hi guys,
I tried searching for this as I vaguely recall having read about it here, but I’ll be darned if I can find it So I noticed today that while winding my watch from stopped position, it felt VERY gritty. I’ve always noticed the winding on this 3235 movement is more “coarse” feeling and “stiffer” than the 3135, but I’ve overlooked it thinking maybe it will “loosen up” in time. Background, I only wear the watch in rotation about 2 days a week, and it only sees office action Any ideas on what would be the cause. |

When you say stopped position you mean depleted main spring? It will feel chunky/gritty once it’s fully wound due to the the over winding protection system. Maybe drop into an ad and wind another watch with the same movement to see if it feels the same.

Sorry, I meant I wound the watch from fully stopped (as in hadn’t worn it in about a week). I gave it about 40 full winds but it felt gritty throughout the whole winding process.

From a fully stopped (Unwound) position the watch should be fairly smooth as there is no resistance on the main spring yet.
If it only felt gritty once its fully wound that is normal but from the start it should be smooth as butter. |

SD43 movement issue
The watch was not running - correct? And feels gritty when winding from the start?
How is it running? Any loss in run-time? I’d keep an eye on that to start. Could be a few things - could be as simple as needing some lubrication - could be an issue with the crown/stem — or could be an issue with the winding mechanism itself. It definitely shouldn’t have any resistance. I’d keep an eye on its performance and if there are any changes - or it keeps up - I’d take it in. It shouldn’t feel coarse or gritty when winding. I had a question like that last month. When i wind mine, it’s so smooth that ididnt think it was winding. After about 30 turns, I felt a fine ratcheting that means that it was fully wound.

My SD43 was always smooth as butter, my wife’s ttdj36 was gritty when winding up. I brought it into the ad where I purchased the watch. They came back and said it’s in ok working condition and told me to just leave it until service. I was very unhappy and went to another AD and they told me that’s not normal for a 12k watch. They sent it to the RSC and 4 weeks later I got the watch back. Smooth as butter.

Hi Brian - just for your own peace of mind I would suggest taking it to your AD to have them look it over.
It does sound like something is different if you've only just noticed it and it's obviously concerning you enough to post here on TRF. Hopefully, as others have suggested, it will be something minor like a lack of lubrication, but best to get it checked out. Good luck & keep us posted. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk

PM send Brian
From what I can tell it's most likely in the reversers/driving wheel for ratched. If these are not lubricated properly or broken it can even block the hand winding, or break off a few teeth from the ratchet wheel. |

Thanks guys, for all the comments.
The watch is keeping perfect time, just very stiff/gritty when winding. I’m going to drop it off at RSC next week if I get into Toronto. I’m sure it’ll get sorted out. |

Mine is smooth till fully wound then I get the gritty feel that you are talking about. I’d pop into an AD just for peace of mind. App helps with the relationship as well

Mine was feeling that way too, until I went to wind it yesterday. Now this morning, after the watch has sat on my night stand for about 10 hours it’s back to winding smoothly I must be dilluisonal |

Do a power reserve test to see what the health of your mainspring is. Just wind it all the way up and set it down motionless. Make a note when you set it down and check on it until it stops. How many hours did it take to stop?

My new D-Blue shares the same 3235 movement and winds like butter. Smoother than any other watch I own.
I’m sure it’s an easy remedy if even needs anything at all. Keep us posted Brian. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
