No Longer Tool Watches

I'm not sure if it really matters but after 5 digit references these watches became jewelry and not "tools". Nothing wrong with jewelry but I don't think "professionals" need to spend thousands on a "tool" to tell them what time it is. Just because they continue to tell the time after they suffer the rigors of a sauna, pool or bike ride doesn't qualify as a "tool".

I guess that means that literally every watch outside a Gshock is jewelry... Even 5 Digit references were thousands of dollars. And 5 digits can exceed the cost of 6 digit references nowadays... My 6 digit references have been through military duty, hiking, camping, beach time, oceans, lakes, yard work, you name it...

Oh boy...

So what makes the 5 digit models tool watches and what exactly disqualifies the 6 digit models from being tool watches?

There's not a Rolex in existence that could still be considered as a tool watch; they're hammers made of gold or hand saws encrusted with jewels. They'll do the job but they overkill for what they're asked to do. I pretty much agree with the OP except because of the way prices have soared even the early tool watches are too expensive to reasonably use as tools.

depends on how you define what a tool watch is.

there is no difference between a 16610 and a 116610 that would make one a tool watch and the other not a tool watch.

One could argue that a 16610 with drilled lugs vs a 116610 without drilled lugs has the characteristics of a tool watch...but that is stretching it.

so now specific 5 digit models?

let me put it this way, a rolex was always an expensive watch. I think people believe a tool watch means it's purpose is only to be used as a tool and it is a bargain. so no rolex would ever qualify. even a $100 rolex in 1960 was very expensive.

I like expensive tools, and I use my 5 digit and 6 digit as tools everyday in my job.

But while the 6 digit references may look a bit more refined, functionally they are every bit the workhorses the older references were.

Probably the last true Rolex was a Sub/Sea Dweller, and once dive computers became the norm they were replaced.

The OP obviously dislikes the 6 digit references, I own a couple, but I too prefer the 4 & 5 digit references. There is no argument from me that the bracelets on the 6 digits far surpass the 5 digits. In addition, the maxi dial and hands is also a nice touch, but I just can not get past the larger case. It just does not look right to me, so its simple...I just don't buy them.
