Advice on why the diver's extension won't snap down on this Submariner clasp?

A colleague and I were talking watches today, and he showed me a problem with the clasp of his Submariner. The clasp on his 14060 doesn't snap closed properly, and upon closer inspection we realized it's because the diver's extension won't snap all the way down into its retracted position.

I'm not experienced with 5-digit Submariner clasp construction, but after studying it for a while I came to the conclusion that the bar attaching the diver's extension to the clasp is probably squished out of shape, and it's preventing the folded extension from snapping past it and down into the clasp. I'll be grateful if members more experienced than me with these components will have a look and share your thoughts.

If pieces here do appear bent out of spec, then I suppose I'll disassemble and attempt to form them back to their original shape (no harm in trying, I suppose). Alternatively, is it possible to simply remove the diver's extension and attach the clasp directly to the bracelet?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can share!

Yes, it does look like it is bent out of shape.

Yes, it is bent.

The longer piece needs to be flattened out so that when it is in place, the rivet at the end opposite the spring-bar snaps into the second set of holes in the clasp.

The shorter extension piece is also bent and should be straightened out. It does not go over the spring-bar, it nestles against the longer blade and that tiny flat piece connected to the short blade lies over top of the bar.

The 91350 extension does not ever snap into place except at that long blade forward rivet-into-the-hole.

I was thinking pressing the clasp blades in a touch just using your thumb and finger.

Many thanks, everyone. These responses are very helpful. I'll take it apart and give it a shot.

His watch is 7 years old (16th birthday gift!). It hasn't had its first service, and it appears to have been through quite an adventurous life so far, so I may just help him to box it up and send it for some professional rehab.
