Rolex Daytona’s 116500 lost/stolen by USPS

Last month I walked into a Rolex AD looking for a BLNR and to my shock they had two steel ceramic Daytona’s in stock. I felt like I was in a dream since all my local ADs wouldn’t even put me on a list unless I purchased $100k from them and then wait 2-5 years. I was with my girlfriend who is not a watch person and didn’t understand my excitement. I immediately said I will take the white ceramic and after a small hesitation asked them if I could purchase the black ceramic as well. To my surprise they said ok and disclosed the watches arrived 2 hours prior to my walk-in.

When purchasing High ticket items I try to avoid sales tax and asked if they could ship out of state to avoid tax. A decision that I may regret forever. On Monday the dealer said they were ready to ship out USPS and I mentioned I always ship Fedex but they said they always use USPS express because of the insurance. They told me because of my location it make take 2-3 days for arrival and since I assumed the AD knows what they are doing I told them to go ahead.

The next day I received a call from USPS that my package arrived and I rushed over. When I arrived to USPS the postmaster said please sign for your envelope. I said your mistaken my package is a box. Upon closer examination she said wait a minute this is your label but it is attached to an envelope set for another destination. Within seconds I realized we have a possible theft/scam. Since it seems strange for the label to be off the package on someone else’s mail. I called the AD from the post office who said they will try to trace the package (how is this possible with the label seperated).

I feel the dealer used negligence in using USPS and not securing the label properly with clear tape. They said they are going to file a claim with USPS and refund me but Rolex will not replace the items. (I insisted on replacement not refund).

I sold some very nice pieces at a loss immediately after cc purchase to pay for these and can’t imagine not getting replacements. USPS later updated the status as “unable to deliver”. Any suggestions from TRF community? Anyone ever receive a label with no package attached.

Yikes, that sucks! At least they're living up to their "because of the insurance" end of the bargain.

very fishy indeed, usually when AD do this kind of "ship to avoid taxes" they either just collect the shipping money and fill out a form that saids the watch is ship out of state or they will let you wear the watch and ship you the box.

Something is very off in this scenario...

Man what a story.

You will get your money, but to get 2 daytonas replaced; won't happen.

If it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, it probably is...

Who puts up 2 116500 on display? I've only been teased once when the AD had a Deepblue and BLNR on display and I immediately wanted to buy both; to my disappointment they were only "samples" (try it on, put your name down and wait X years)

Right two Daytona’s in the display case seemed insane. Obviously in hindsight I shouldn’t have risked shipping such irreplaceable watches at MSRP but I have never had a shipping issue in my life and put trust in the AD.

Not true. At least not with the dealers that I have dealt with.

A couple of side facts that in not sure mean anything. Before they shipped on Monday they called me and said USPS told them because of the location it may not arrive until Thursday (tracking showed Wednesday) and the “label” arrived next day approx 19 hours later. They also seem to give me hope that the package may be recovered which seems illogical to me for such high value items with no label and some unusual circumstances. I will definitely let everyone know if for some magical reason that happens.

I didn't get a chance to read the entire thread yet but a few thoughts...

It's pretty normal for a company to choose which shipping provider they use, especially based on their insurance coverage.

My company uses USPS and I have noticed certain destinations will not get USPS Express packages overnight. If that is the case then I always switch to UPS or FedEx, especially if the customer paid for and is expecting the package to arrive the next day.

I don't know how they expect to find this package if the actual label is on another package. I'm happy I'm not in charge of that. Might need to get camera footage involved to see if it was actually dropped off/picked up as a box and not envelope.

You risked shipping 40k in watches to save $1,500? Why? Given what these are going for i would be thrilled to pay $1500 in tax on top of msrp and run out the door.

Retail is 12,500 each. Nowhere near 40K. However I agree, I would have paid the tax and walked out with them.

Buying two new SS Daytona's from an AD by a walk in customer ?
That has not been possible for a decade or so.

We don’t value these at retail anymore. If we do, please give me a shout. I would love to buy as many as humanly possible at $12,500 each. Even at 25k it’s absurd to ship them out to save a meaningless amount of money considering the risk. Shipping high dollar items is rolling the dice. I certainly don’t want to have to risk that twice. Once from the AD and once back to me.

If this is true that’s the worst luck ever.

Every piece of jewelry or watch I’ve had shipped has always been with UPS or FedEx and the jewelers have special insurance with those carriers. I’ve never heard of it going USPS. And 2 Daytonas in a case and the AD willing to sell both to someone who just walked in? I dunno man.

So this is a new AD to you?

You just walk in and they are willing to sell you not one but TWO daytonas with no strings attached at MSRP?

Interesting....

And it gets "lost" in the mail

Interesting...

I am surprise why the AD didn't sell to those in waiting list.

Or it is their policy to sell some at the window.

Seems now is impossible to find the watches. Can you share the serial # for both watches to alert others.

Speculations aside.....if the ADs refused to ship via Fedex next day/Parcel Pro insured....shouldn't of skipped the the tax and just picked them up. Sorry OP but lesson learned.....guess you had to wake up from the dream one way or another.

This never happened to me since my AD almost uses Fedex exclusively. on the other hand, I don't know what kind of luck you had by spotting two 116500 on display at a Rolex AD and then lost due to possible theft/scam. If I saw two Daytonas on display I would make sure I walk away with them in my hands.

Based on your profile, you live in Florida. You may not be aware, but Florida has a Use Tax. The Use Tax rate is the same as the sales tax rate, which is 6%.

Thus, you still need to pay taxes on your purchase. Doing otherwise is tax fraud. You can learn more here: http://floridarevenue.com/taxes/Pages/consumer.aspx
