Elderly hip breaks

Hey guys, don’t want to impose my problems on anyone... but, any stories/advice/info is appreciated. Earlier this year my 84 year old Mom had triple bypass. FINALLY, she was feeling so much better. Then this morning I got a call she had fallen during the night and broke her hip. Wonderful. She is having surgery to fix it today and I am on my way to be by her side.

She really is in good health and a strong (elderly) woman, has anyone else had parents or grandparents break their hip? What was recovery like? Anything you guys can share is appreciated

Paul, everyone is different but at that age, that injury truly sucks.
Sorry to hear. Hope for the best.

My 97 year old grandmother broker her hip earlier this year. When I saw her in the hospital the day after her surgery she was in good spirits. She’s doing fine now but needs a walker now to get around. She had physical therapy and liked the lady that was helping her. Like your mom, my grandmother is a pretty tough little lady. She’s fine but complains about having to use a walker now. She said she’s finally getting old.

My dad is 86. Garrulous, happy, loud and still impossibly opinionated.

The only thing he has broken so far is the amount of beer he can drink in one seating: 6

Sorry, useless post.

At that age, calcium levels are a big concern with bone injuries. Hope that won't be an issue.
Wishing her all the best.

Sorry other of this Paul. No experience here, closest I have is mother had knee replaced last year at 77. I know that's not the same. I do know that attitude and after-care are the most important elements. Best of luck, I hope everything goes well.

Good luck. I can only suggest she stays upright and active. In my family it seems pneumonia follows falls. Positive vibes for your mom's speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear this. Does she need a pinning or a replacement?
About one half of people over 80 fall every year.

Sorry to hear Paul. My wife is an LCSW and spent 15 years of her career in a nursing home as her concentration in her masters program was geriatrics.

The one thing I always used to hear was elderly folks usually don’t fall and break a hip. They break a hip and then fall. Meaning the hip usually has the problem first and the fall is the result.

Either way the result is the same. Hope they get her fixed up pretty easily and get her back on her feet. Amazing how efficient they are with this surgery now.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I got on to town a little while ago and just left the hospital after a short visit. She is in good spirits and no pain. The surgery is tomorrow morning and it’s not a replacement or even a partial replacement but they are putting a rod in there to stabilize the hip. From what I understand it is the least complicated and intense of all the hip repair surgeries, so that is good news. I will definitively pass on all the TRF hugs

Best wishes to your Mom for a quick and complete recovery.

Some experience with weakened bones here. Usually the hip breaks and then the person falls. Make sure the Dr.'s check her bone strength.

From experience... Get the walker with wheels, hand brakes and a seat. Much easier to use and she'll have a seat for when she gets tired.

Yes, this is my experience in relation to my Mum. Prior to the event it never occurred to me that it happened in the reverse order to what you would expect.
She was 103 and phoned me to say her hip was very painful. An hour later she fell and was diagnosed with a 'broken hip'.
There was no trauma prior to the pain and I felt sure that the fracture preceded the fall. At 103 one would expect Osteoporosis and I guess it doesn't take much to cause a fracture.
Unfortunately she did not survive the Partial Replacement - taken off her own meds and given a range of different ones needed pre-op resulted in organ failure. I have heard of many successful recoveries in folks in their 80s and even 90s. All the best.

Wish your mother well. My Dad in his 70s had his hip replaced successfully, in fact much more successful than his knee replacement.

Best of luck Paul.
An IM Rod is pretty minimally invasive. Usually done through a 3-4 inch incision on the side of the hip and done under x-ray for guidance. Fairly quick too. Most in good health rehab fairly quick. Well wishes to you and yours.
