Day Date or Daytona? (both platinum, both baguette)
Good day all, though I created this account some time ago, my being in the military/deployed however, has kept me a little busy lol. Question, which will bring the better value over the next 10-20 years-- a platinum day date with baguette hour markers (40mm) OR a platinum Daytona with baguette hour markers?
Also, I enjoy seeing everyone's Rolex pictures. I think I drive my wife crazy, but hey, it relaxes me to dream big and plan. I have a submariner and love it. I am just thinking about my unicorn. Which is more iconic though? All the best to you all. |

If I was buying and wanted diamonds it would be day date hands down. But if your asking solely on value retention I’m going to guess daytona

The Daytona would be my choice, and it would hold better value as a PM piece. I like the DD, but think it looks better in YG.

PM and diamonds are more in line with the DD 40. If you're bent on a Daytona, I'll put my money on SS Models specifically those zenith models.

I'd pick the Daytona.
I am actually not a fan of the overall aesthetics of the platinum DD (personal preference). If I was in the market for a DD, there are other configurations I'd much prefer. That being said, there are also other PM Daytona configurations I'd pick over the platinum if I was picking based solely on personal aesthetic preference. Anyway, I would not have prospective long-term value retention be a meaningful factor for this big of a purchase. At this price, I think you should be focused on purchasing what you really love and not think about what it might be worth 5, 10, or 20 years down the road. |

I bought the Daytona first........now I’m saving to get the DD. Don’t buy a watch at this price point with this perceived value retention notion. The number of people that are in the market to buy something like this is very small. Buy it because you love it.

I wouldn’t base this purchase on future value. I’d go with what you’ll be happier looking at on your wrist. If any consideration....the smooth bezel vs ceramic, pres bracelet vs PCL’s...
Both are beautiful dials. No wrong answer here |

dd40 for me. Both are beautiful but very different. Which complications would you use more? To me, the bezel on the daytona covers up too much of that gorgeous metal and the president bracelet is unique to the model.

I’d go with a platinum DD over the platinum Daytona, but I’d never get diamonds, I think it looks cuzhine

Day Date. Big fan of the Daytona but I’d pick an Everose DD40 with the white dial first.

Day Date or Daytona? (both platinum, both baguette)
The answer is 10-20 years away. You want to know which will retain the best residual value at least 10 years from now.
So first start with the initial cost - because the residual value shouldn’t be calculated as % of MSRP. Both watches sell new for 10K less than MSRP at ADs. And if you want the best residual value, start with the best initial cost - go preowned. Preowned Platonas litter the listings at $50-55K. Same for the DD40’s. The crap shoot is what GenZ’ers will crave when they’re at the peak of their discretionary income. I’d hedge and buy both and be done with it. But if you must choose, pick the one with a tinge of history - the 50th Anniv. Daytona methinks. One that is single owner, has a full set, and a purchase date equal to its original release year. That should maximize your probable value retention or gain. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Daytona. I don’t like the smooth bezel on the platinum DD.

Neither will bring value over time unless you bought for 35% plus off then you might only lose a few thousand or so. Which one do you actually prefer?

I like both watches but have owned the Platinum DD II with the diamond dial and liked it. It is a difficult choice leaving out current values and future projections. I would go with the Daytona. I think the diamond markers make a special watch more so and I have never seen it in person. With that said, I would source the watch pre-owned and save huge from even the discount you can buy it new for. The measure of the value 10-20 years down the road can be difficult to project but figure it on what you pay for each. Look in the used market and see what they are going for and you should get a feel for it. Good luck and I look forward to seeing an incoming.

OP's choice really as both are very nice.
IMHO it would be the DD40 as it is more a 'dress up' timepiece and so diamonds, to me imho, are more appropriate. The Daytona is a sports watch, so diamonds seem a bit out of place. Again, imho. Both are lovely. PS: If this was Daytona on leather strap, then the diamond dial might look more dress... so diamonds could be possible with leather strap use.

Daytona in this situation. This is the best looking dial for the platinum Daytona, IMO. If without diamond markers then DD40.

For a watch at this price point, you're lucky if you can afford it, so buy the one you love the most and be happy.

I think the thing that will really drive up future prices is if one of them gets discontinued. In my experience, that seems to be when the feeding frenzy begins.
If this is a factor for you, then close your eyes and try to pick which one will not be hanging around 10-20 years from now. Any luck? Yeah, it's impossible to say. And to further complicate things, precious metal and diamonds usually don't appreciate like steel. (One recent notable exception was the Rainbow Daytona which opened up at around $92k and now goes for about $250k). When it premiered, there were pages and pages of posts from the 'steel is king' crowd about how hideous it was, etc., etc. Nobody here could have predicted that it would command secondary prices like it has. Just like nobody here is going to be able to tell you about either one of these models you're looking at. If I had to guess, it would seem that an 'Anniversary Edition' like the Daytona would not be around forever, and the DD would be here to stay, but that is just a crap shoot as well. A few years ago the DD2 premiered to a less than stellar reception (speaking overall here), and when it was replaced by the DD40, then those prices have gone through the roof. Bottom line: Just get what you want. If it's a dream watch, it should be YOUR dream. |

Daytona without question for me. I do love the DD line but it's whatever suits your taste and lifestyle.
