White Gold vs Yellow Gold

Lots of chatter lately about “ why would you buy a white gold watch” or “why would you buy a yellow gold watch”.

I am curious which color is prefered on TRF, white gold or yellow gold?

I think I would go yellow or rose for a Cellini, but I would choose white for a Day-Date or a Daytona. I have a dark complexion, and I love the way white gold looks against it.

Also, I like the way 18k white gold is "selectively" under the radar (some people will know, and I imagine those are people who won't judge me or think differently of me).

A white gold watch is more under the radar. While the subtle differences are probably no way only noticeable to us, I felt the white gold was too gray in color. Gold is yellow in color and white is not a natural look of the metal.

Thus I opted to purchase platinum instead.

I enjoy both but prefer WG as it's more under the radar but you still get the nice heft of PM.

If only one PM watch in the collection I would and did chose YG. When I had multiple PM watches I went with YG or WG or Platinum.

WG on a bracelet. YG or RG is fine for me on a strap, but full bracelet im just not comfortable with it. Both in the bling factor and also because i don't think it looks particularly good on me.

Love both! Wear PT/WG most often. I’ve tried (many times) to wear YG as a daily, but just wasn’t ever comfortable, always felt as if I had to baby it, and it is loud for my daily taste. I don’t mind the boldness/loudness...just not daily. Oddly enough, I don’t feel the need to baby my white metal pieces st all.

Rolex makes their watches in a variety of metals and hues because there is no rule as far as what color of gold or what type of metal is best. Rolex is smart enough to let the consumer choose and provides them enough variety.

I personally love yellow gold.

Yellow gold. It's natural color and emanates a nice glow in the setting sun at dusk. If I want a white metal I will go stainless steel. I have no hangups with the bling factor and have no need to " fly under the radar" which is a silly description.

Yellow and Rose for me, and if I really had some dough to throw I'd get platinum. WG isn't for me but I can see the appeal.

Why bother with White Gold? If you are going to buy a "GOLD" Watch get Yellow Gold … if not get Stainless Steel. Gold naturally is YELLOW. Nothing like a Rolex Yellow Gold Watch! Seems to me to defeat the purpose of buying a "Gold Watch." Most don't have $35 - $40K to just spend on a watch so … it comes down to more disposable income. My opinion only.

YG is great, but WG is much more wearable and under-the-radar. Think it takes a special kinda bloke (probably not one under 30) to pull off YG with class; WG somewhat easier.

Hmm...well I looked all over for the stainless steel model of this, but just couldn't find it. So I "had" to go with the "inferior" WG.

But, you're right. Everytime I go to put it on, I'm plagued by the notion that someone might mistake it for a steel watch.

In all seriousness, I like yellow gold, too. If there would have been "both" option on the poll, I would have voted for that.

WG can have a warmer look to it than SS or Pt.

If you don’t want other people to notice you’re wearing a gold watch and the connotations that brings depending on the situation then WG is a great choice.

I think YG and RG even more so (but not the Everose hue) are beautiful metals but there is no denying that a full ‘golden’ watch will get noticed in some circumstances which may or may not be desirable to the wearer.

Nothing against WG, in the right application can be the ideal PM. However I prefer the elegance of Yellow as there is nothing like it. It's truly timeless. Sometimes WG seems like a wasted opportunity.

I prefer white gold as it’s sportier, younger, more discreet and more versatile than yellow gold. That being said, I love yellow gold, I just couldn’t really wear it everyday like WG.

And by the way, there has not been a lot of "chatter" about "why would you buy a WG watch?"

Just a thread from a poster who seems to be intent on stirring up controversy given his posts over the last couple of days.

White Gold DJ41

Just bought a white gold DJ41 after much deliberation. Ofcourse helped along by the fact that I didn’t have too much of time to decide since there were others waiting in line . Anyway a DJ41 blue dial with a fluted bezel is whatI have now.
